If only I could go back to my youth with any bloody camera.

The places where 'I was there' but never bothered to take photographs.

Wasted youth!

I would settle for being 25 again, with or without a camera....

Your as old as you feel Mr Derrickman.

Nothing like being retired and having the health to enjoy it.

one of the best ideas is the resealable plastic bag for your bog roll and cigs/lighter.....invaluble items for a long trip.
failing that it has to be the greater light output/longevity of modern lighting which has truely opened up both the mines your in and the photo opotunities.....my earliest days underground involved flash ribbon.messy job.
if its a hole explore it...

I've always carried a handkerchief inside my helmet, I don't suppose that's eligible as an innovation but it's very useful

... how about office laminating machines?

A good thought, however I find laminating bogroll makes it too shiny, however it does make it easier to economise by using both sides.......

shudders at the thought of that rough/smooth stuff we got in schools in the 70s.
for a quick subject change before it occours to someone to ask if laminated bogroll is reusable....
how about those garden candles that the wind wont blow out...handy for when your lights fail, however ive found wind up torches to be a pain.

Well, perhaps the best innovation is the internet - pathetic old gits like me can share in all the excitment without getting out of a chair . . . sad or what?

for those wishing to pursue this topic to its (il)logocal conclusion I would suggest the following background reading;

1) Stephen Fry, "The Liar" ;- "two sheets; one to wipe, one to polish"

2) Ranulph Fiennes "Mind Over Matter" and Mike Stroud "Shadows in the Wasteland" ;- two accounts of the same trans-Antarctic expedition, where the whole subject of tents, plastic bags, frost-bite and their attendant ramifications are treated in far more detail than anyone could possibly wish to know

a propos rough/smooth, if there was ever an incentive to do well at 11-Plus, that may well have been it....
