My starter for 5... Heated car seats 🙂 So nice after a day in deep water!

Close second is the Petzl Pantin.

I don't have heated seats in my car as I no longer own a Volvo.
But what I really enjoy after a few hrs underground is a mug of tea from the flask and a sandwich.
While munching away I like to study the surroundings. Trying to work out how the area was worked, when and who last worked there.
Simply just appreiciating the fact that It is good to be involved in mine exploration.

I don't think Hymac580 and DylanW count as innovations, but their knowledge is invaluable. (and you don't have to carry them :lol: )

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

Derrickman on another thread reminded me of the (now much neglected) innovation of waist mounted carbide generators.
Not only did they give a great light but when you stopped for a brew, you could stick them inside your suit as a heater, lovely & warm 🙂 NB the generator not the lamp!!

We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

LED lighting.

The changes in the last 5 years have been staggering - a torch with a couple of AAs or CR123As can provide similar output to something that was the size of a picnic hamper and weighed about 5kg.

Exploring without a Stop (for example) can be done with a Figure of Eight; film cameras can still be used and even an old glass thermos can still be used if you take care of it. In fact, pretty much anything else can be replicated by 'old technology'.

Lights are one thing that you can't replicate, though - the ability to get a broad flood of light and / or see 50m away makes life so much easier, even if it does take a bit of the mystery away.

I started off a bit tongue in cheek but taking the thread seriously I have to agree with Mr Vanoord, and not just because I have a big hand in it now.

The Oldham belt weight battery and the feeble little ray of yellow light will soon be a thing of the past.
I have had Oldham lead acid batteries leak, fortunately without damaging ropes etc.
I have also banged my head and had my bulb go; something that an LED does not do.

I can now go underground and see all of the colours in a splendour that was not possible until LED lighting. Small artefacts are seen that I never even noticed before. The biggest slate and limestone mines are lit up like day.
Frankly, there is a large limestone mine that I go in alone, with the Oldham I would not be able to even find my way around.

Also, if you carry some Hydrogen Peroxide, you can put this in your carbide generator to turn your carbide lamp into an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. Perfect for cutting locks off.

NB:- DO NOT TRY THIS, THERE IS NO FLASHBACK ARRESTOR AND IT WILL GRENADE!!!!

Got to be LED lights, invented the same year as the first 747 flew, which means every single illumination from cabin to warning lamps was probably an incandecent bulb.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

I'm wandering OT but it was either the A380 or the 787 Dreamliner (think it was the 787) that was touted as the first commercial jetliner to feature 'all LED internal lighting'. Took them a while then!
