Hello everyone

My name's Annabel and I'm a creative writing PhD student at UCF.

My project involves the Boulton and Watt mining company archive. I use narratives from these to illuminate stories of the contemporary Cornish landscape. The project is funded by the European Social Fund and is supported by King Edward Mine museum, Troon, and Bike Barn, Portreath.

I'm looking for individuals who are willing to talk to me about Cornish mining heritage and the changes in the landscape. Do you explore mines? What is your opinion of Heartlands? Do you use the Mineral Tramways? Do you have memories of South Crofty you'd be willing to share?

There are lots of fascinating opinions and discussions on this forum, and I'd love to be able to access them for my work.

Perhaps we could go for a walk together and I could record you as you talk about your interest in mine exploration. I'm willing to wander an adit or two!

I'm based in Falmouth but can travel.

PM me if you want to meet

Thank you

Annabel

Quite the contrary Dave.

I'm sure there are many many people willing to help and chat. It would probably make sense for you to come along to weirdybeardies, (Cornwall Mine Explorer's Club) for a yap. There are a load of professionals, a load of seasoned explorers, historians and general people who are eloquent and informative.

I don't mind dragging someone around a hole and have a spare lamp.

NB:- Weirdybeardies is at the Fox and Hounds (Comford/lanner) on the first thursday of the month at 7:30pm. So, this thursday.

Are you asking us permission to use what we have written in the variious forums in the past? I am sure if you PM an individual contributor about something they have written, most would be happy for it to be used sensibly or for acedemic purposes.
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Hi Annabel,

I am not sure where to start, but your project has interested some topics which are close to my heart - even though I am no longer based in Cornwall, I hasten to add.

You see I graduated from CSM in the 1980's when places like South Crofty, Wheal Jane and Geevor were still operational 'just'.

I remember Harvey's foundry in Hale, and a few other site which I suspect have been turned into shopping malls and the like - or just museum pieces. South Crofty on the other hand will live again - I hope.

Yes I have digressed a little. I moved upto to Derbyshire about 4 years ago to Bonsall.

The strange thing is that the influence of the Cornish Tin miner is not restricted just to Cornwall.

I currently work for Tarmac Tunstead Quarry in Buxton and I have located some very interesting photo's

Let me know if you would like to hear more ?

Kind Regards, Paul Turner

PS I have not been back to Troon, Tuckingmill, Portreath for about 15 years now

Not sure if you can read PM's, as they have to be turned on.

My chum and I have dragged many people out on some interesting trips and several are now good mates, and drag us out on trips.

I sent you a PM regarding having an impromptu poke around.

I think that if you want to have a yap with people who are enthusiasts, it's good form to be on a trip, rather than out of context. We quite often stop for a yap. You can either go for a bit of an interesting, but safe walk in, or probably the best trip in cornwall, via a bit of an easy and safe abseil.

I'd make a point of dragging a few characters out, as it's always interesting and the yaps are the best bit.

Firstly Annabel, welcome to the forum. As Stuey said there's a goodly amount of yap goes down at the Fox & Hounds....most of it informed and intelligent.
There are also one or two who are at the cutting edge of mining development in this area (Camborne Redruth) at present; all CSM grads by the way.
Our club was formed from the Cornwall Mine Rescue Organisation when we ceased operations a few years ago.
A few of also have collections of historic mining memorabilia.
All welcome! 🙂
See you there?

Perhaps Councillor Mark K should be contacted, I'm sure he could talk for a while on the subject.

Or Mr Allen Buckley, or even Mr Neil Hitchens.
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Hello, and thank you for flagging this up. No, I don't think that my ethical framework would allow me to take forum replies as material.

As much as I love reading the forum threads I have to make sure that material gathered for my project is offered voluntarily with full understanding of how it would be used, the right to withdraw, and the right to confidentiality.

And also-- I'd much rather meet you all face to face, if possible! You all seem to have so much fun on here, and the knowledge and enthusiasm is obvious.

Yes, I hadn't realised that. A quick email to the site webmaster sorted it out. He allowed me to get round the restrictions, which was really kind.

I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on Heartlands. I don't have an agenda, just gathering stories and opinions.

Thank you for reading and replying, Dave. PM me if you fancy a chat.

Thank you so much for these suggestions. I'll follow them up. I read AB's History of Cornish Mining at the very start of my project, and it was really helpful.

If you think of anyone else who might like to speak to me then please let me know.

Cavers and geologists are synonymous with beards. It is an insult to many of them who are not weird and don't have beards. I do however.

They come from all sorts of backgrounds and often have a humbling level of knowledge and modesty.

Gra, are you about next week for a poke around one eve next week?
