The photo came up on my screen as a random selection and I just wondered where it was.

Of all the mines in the database this must be the easiest to find being right in the middle of the M1.

I bet parking is difficult though.

It's by the side of Rockley Lane which is to the west of the M1 and the Blast Furnace is adjacent to the engine house.
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Its just my little joke, I have to have my bit of fun now and again.
But the pushpin on the google map is right in the middle of motorway.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

It does doesn't it 😉

Unfortunately those pushpins are only accurate to 100m, i.e. the identify something being in a 100m grid rather than the exact location 😞 Hence things like this!
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

It's a bit nearer the entry I put in for the same thing (but as coal not iron). Which I put NZ instead of SE  - that's only 100km too far north

There are also parallax issues with the vertical views and I wonder if these inaccuracies are also true on the maps? If you look at a tall vertical feature such as a chimney you will often find the top is obviously not in the same location as the base. I don't know if this is relevant, since the maps overlay on the images always shows the map roads coinciding with the aerial view roads. Do they tweak the maps to fit the aerial images? If so, would this result in positional inaccuracies? I suppose it depends on how good the software is. Would this vertical misplacement also affect apparent locations of features at elevated locations on the sides of mountains? And would any misplacement be more obvious near the edge of an aerial view pane?
