Not been up there for some time but it may not be just a straight case of vandalism. We have had 2 severe winters which may well have blown what was left of the lime mortar, coupled with the possibility that livestock (cattle or sheep) may well have used the corner for a good old scratch, then there is the chance this may be the cause, just a thought.
We've had a couple of such examples here in the quarry where I live.

It must be 2 years now since the NT took over the Engine House, what works are they doing Lee?

Pete.

I noticed this a while back, I don't recall any obvious signs of foul play having brought it down and I suspect it is simply a combination of age and frost/wind having felled the remains of the gable before the NT got round to doing anything with the remains there. They have consolidated the Boulton & Watt engine house (and had the PDMHS conservation team remove several inches of compacted cowshit from the interior!) and also the powder house.
Follow the horses, Johnny my laddie, follow the horses canny lad-oh!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
