There seem to be two levels / tramways:

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.000415&lon=-3.959287&z=18.3&r=0&src=msl

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.002449&lon=-3.959485&z=17.2&r=0&src=msl

The second one seems to have been lost to the untopping?.

I'd imagine that the marking 'tramway' just means the provision of rails for tipping, rather than any means of taking the finished product away from the site?

Hi Vanoord

Many thanks, Llion, for posting these photos. Will try and get up to this area and have a look around week after next. 🙂

Follow the haul road up from Cwm then pick up the bike tracks to the top and make sure you dont fall into the cracks 🙂 Would be interesting to drop a rope down some of them and see how far down you could go...a few are quite big !!

I uncovered a short length of cast pipe, in the ground, about 1/4" wall that has split along its length due to freezing im assuming, its on the left side of the leccy fence as you walk towards Llyn Bach. Got a pic of it on my comp but not home till tomorrow.

Anybody know what the water depth at the bottom of the back-vein incline is at the moment? We are hoping to have a close look at the crane in chamber 1 west at the head of the EG incline, sometime next week, but don't want any nasty surprises as regards water!

Also have been wondering if the stabiity of the floor 5 tip above the lake level portal can be affected by heavy rainfall.
Have heard that bad weather is on it's way?

The water at the bottom of the Back Vein Incline is a fixed height throughout the year, give or take.

It drains down a shaft (constructed for ventilation iirc, but effectively a roofing shaft) into one of the G floor 'Z' chambers, so the depth is constant. The only variable would be in times of heave rain, when it might be a couple of inches deeper.

Which doesn't tell the man how deep it'll be :)

A bit above knee depth going East (Oakeley direction) mid-thigh or a bit deepr going the other way (under the lake!)

The shored up adit has withstood some particularly foul weather since the gate and props were installed, I guess the tip must be fairly well consolidated. I'd not worry too much about it. Just don't picnic under the timbered section

Many thanks for the info. Guess it will be approx waist level for me, going west.

We tend never to linger under the timbered section of Lake level adit! 🙂

Visited Cwmorthin last week, and had a quick look in old vein chamber 8 East with the steps. Noticed fallen slabs at the bottom and deceided not to look any further. We were aware this is an unstable chamber, so made our quiet way back to the dams and to Oakeley and the compressor.

I remember reading a thread a while back (2010) entitled "A wander round Cwmorthin" which discussed this chamber and the possibiity of a major fall here, and we were wondering how much has actually come down since this thread was wirtten and when we visited. (Certainly the whole area around chamber 8E struck me as being a bit iffy - timbered sections and loose bits etc)

After the trip, and wishing to read up more, I came across a thread on "Mine Explorer" which mentioned a couple of people hearing a series of two rumbles which sounded like rock falls.
They mention hearing it while at the "steps where ash from the boiler was thrown" Are these the steps down from floor DE to F down the tip near the Oakeley chamber 34 incline by any chance?

This, according to the thread was in September of this year. Was it ever established where in the mine the fall, if this is what it was, occurred?

I gather from what has been said on "Mine Explorer" that indeed something has come down in 8E, and this explains the fallen slabs mentioned on "Mine Explorer" and also noted by us. Have all the nasty slabs all come down now making it more stable, or is it still to be considered a potentially dangerous chamber to linger in?

And by the way, what is the purpose of the ladder attached to the wall at the bottom of chamber 8E?

Another question:-
In chamber 31 where we entered Oakeley at the end of Lefel Ffrench (the chamber with the bits of what looks like the remains of a generator strewn around the floor), we found a tunnel leading roughly out further east? This appeared to be in a bit of an iffy state and we had a quick look for curiosity's sake, but a quick look only! 😢

Anyone know where, if anywhere this leads ? 🙂

To clarify just where you mean - look at the diagram on page 87 of Cwmorthin SLate Quarry (I thought I'd posted this, but can't spot it at the moment - if I havn't - I will.)
I'm guessing that you mean the level through wall 31 into chamber 30 which was the original route to Lefel Ffrench - and which carried the drainage water from the dewatering.

I think the "generator" remains may be those of the old electric pump used to drain the last few feet of the Back Vein water as Cwmorthin E was slightly below Oakeley DE.

Cheers

The ladder is stored there for use in getting to places where a ladder is required!

As far as can be made out, the rumbles were just rumbles - there appear to be no new falls.

Chamber 8E has a reputation for being rather unstable: that said, the wall that has partially fallen is now in a better state than it was before.

In my humble, I don't find 8E that worrisome - there are a lot of places in the mine that are a lot more unstable. That said, it does have potential for blocks to detach from the roof without warning, so I would probably advise against sitting there for lunch or having a nap in there.

As regards the ash being thrown down, I think that refers to the old vein chamber to the west of the incline?

That said, anywhere that there was a boiler (incline winding, potentially compressors etc.) there would be ash production and it would be easier to throw the ash into an abandoned chamber than cart it out for disposal.

Many thanks for your reply, Graham. I have looked at the map you indicated, and yes, looks as if this is it. Had in fact looked at this map repeatedly in reference to this, but coudn't really be certain. Always like to know exactly where I am in underground slate quarries, but on the other hand like a bit of mystery too 🙂
