A bit of detective work by Don last night who has concluded that this in fact is a bridge that was removed rather than a bridge that was never completed.

The level is in fact walled up and from below and backfilled, so it looks like the bridge was removed and the support pushed out of the way when it was no longer needed.

Isn't that the slab with the 1939 graffiti on it in the foreground Simon? Was there on Saturday. Needs some easily removeable barrier putting in front of it to stop people standing on teh slab and damaging the graffiti. Mentioned it to Miles on way out and he agreed and will look into it.

That's the one.

The writing isn't quite as clear as it was back in January of this year:

It used to be quite an effort to get to this chamber!

Is this the chamber we abseiled into earlier in the year?

Yes - long abseil down 7 East then we used to slide down to Floor E. Now there are steps up the slide so it can be accessed much more easily.

Bit of a shame if there's easy access - the 1939 writing is historically very important: my suspicion has been that it was done at the outbreak of the war as parts of the workings were abandoned need, presumably as the men went off to war.

Besides the 1939 graffiti that needs protecting, there are 'I think' about 6 sleepers on that level with slots cut to drop flat bar rail into. These must date back to pre-1900 and have survived being underwater from 1901 until the mine was drained in the 1930's. (As opposed to bridge or light flat bottomed rail spiked to sleepers that still exist in the post 1930's workings) Forgot to take measurements and photos of one of these slotted sleepers, next time... They are quite soft now and perhaps someone ought to look into what we could treat them with to preserve them.

Still wondering how Miles has got that new ex BR sleeper in there - they're notoriously heavy and awkward to move at the best of times! (Done it many times on the F&WHR...). Maybe his new zip line?
