Maybe some people have different criteria/desires/aims than you though!

Sorry to hear that Tony. What part of your sage advice did you fail to heed? (In case I want to enter next year if it's on).

First, let me talk about the ones that did NOT win:

1 Croesor Rhosydd - nice brighly lit mine explorer crossing a flood shaft on a wire.

2 A very young explorer, with a rope over his shoulder, and carrying a large ammo can, in a Hearth Stone mine in SE England by Peter Burgess.

3 No 32 in the caving section - Drilling J2 Cave, Mexico. Not in a mine I know, but a fine action shot.

Why did they not win? Because they were not entered in the Mining Section 😞

The judges [there were three in the end, four if you include Mike Moore who had the final say, as it was his money were were playing with] all agreed that a mining photo "MUST HAVE A PERSON IN IT".

Excuse me Tony. What qualification do you actually have to be a judge? You can't even read the names on the entries. I entered NOTHING for the Hidden Earth competition whatsoever in any category. But such a photo is in the AditNow competition. The mine in question is not a hearthstone working, unless Jug Holes has a curious deposit of this material tucked away where no mine explorer has found it yet.

You guys are entitled to judge on whatever criteria you like and I expect whatever won was an excellent picture.
But one thing that strikes me about cave photography these days is how similar everything you see is. Everyone seems to be working to the same 'formula'
Always a caver in there
Always dramatic contrast with backlighting

The guy with arms out to the passage walls and a strong backlight coming over his right shoulder, and the girl crouched down looking at some backlit formation are such total cliches I'm afraid they get zero marks from me for imagination or subtlety even though it doubtless makes for dramatic pictures.

I think the pictures on this site show a great variation of style, in terms of both technique and content, and long may it continue !!!

I think you are absolutely right.

In my miss-spent youth I was a professional photography, wedding, football matches, pubs, clubs and funeral. Unlike these FRPS tosser, my snaps had to sell, or I would starve. All my books are illustrated with photos taken by myself or my wife Anne. I usually arranged the flashguns and camera positions, but Anne pressed the button and got the credit. I have won a prizes in caving competions and had my snaps published in Descent and the old Speleologist. The most recent snaps are on:

I can read, not sure about my writing. "Many a slip twix lip and cup".

Your loss Peter, not mine.

Sorry my mistake, was only going from memory. Retake it in a mine with your lad carrying more rope, ladders, SRT kit etc and I will sent it to Social Services and enter it at next years Hidden Earth. A certain winner.

Okay guys enough Tony has had a lot of sport doing this - the prize was £100 and £20 of mining books. For the record as a judge he couldn't enter, although if he could have copied the nice picture off the bridge off the adit now site it would have been contender.

The scale thing had everyone thinking, there were some superb shots of mining features that could have won other competitions if they had been entered into them. A couple of Sparty's were superb photos of hoppers and brick arching but as record shots where was the scale a person certainly do this but what about a 12 inch rule.

I know the winner was one that Simon placed on behalf of someone but as he couldn't be arsed to be around and with some of the above can't say I blame him it hasn't yet been confirmed officialy to me yet. But when it is Helen you can claim your prize. I have some friends coming upto nenthead in 3 weeks time to save postage please PM me

I will sponsor the same again next Peter B I will nominate you to be a judge next time and you can set the criteria for Tony albeit as a scale goes he will be of no use due to being so stressed lost over 2 stone in weight he could be recognised.

Enough indeed. I am pleased Tony took my little dig seriously since it was posted in jest - so now things are even, as several of us thought he was being serious a week or so back. As for being a judge, I have won no photographic prizes, have no professional background, still use a little compact digital box which came out of the ark, with a couple of ancient lowtech flash guns and slave unit. I perch my camera on a wobblepod and think any picture is good if it is in focus and was taken with the camaera held level. Is that good enough? 😉

Sure is good enough because this is meant to be a good prize for a decent mining photo not for some arty farty shot that has been presented in a gold frame cos the so called amatuer can afford to.

I wanted this to be for the mining community and hence asking practical people to judge it ie someone like yourself whi knows what thy are looking at and know its good enough

cheers

I can't really see the reasoning behind all this nonsense over scale in mining photos, not all underground photos need a person or a rule in them for scale.

In a lot of instances a person would spoil the photo completely.

Most people on our forums and elswhere too I reckon can fully understand the "scale" of features within the photo they are looking at, to most of us it becomes second nature.

And if you don't believe me take a good look at the excellent book of photographs published here recently "UNDERGROUND REFLECTIONS" There are a total of 36 full colour superb photographs, on only six pages will you see people. I rest my case, you do not always require scale.
The management thanks you for your co operation.
