I am judging the mining photos at this year's Hidden Earth, so perhaps a few comments might be useful. Black and White photos go straight to the bin, along with any photos without scale. A caver or a mine explorer adds scale to any photos. The Welsh entrants may use their favorite sheep for scale instead of their grotty girl friends. Any photos of the crane in Box Mines are also due for the bin. I like photos with speleothems. They are always a winner.

Tony,

There is nowhere in the rules that says B&W photos cannot be entered - I say this as the sponsor and holding the final say. As for Sheep you live in Wales and therefore I bow to your particular interest, although I don't regard this as a criteria. Speleotherms as this is a Mining / Man made underground not sure that will apply - scale does matter particularly when showing a specific artefact or feature.

I can only assume a lot of this is said in fun - Peter B please do not be put off - for the record I have stated that unless a better selection of photos are brought to the conference I will end it this year. The last two years have been won by very similar photos' from the same two mines the Silica Mines nr Neath and Box (cranes) hence why Tony made that particular statement. There are much better subjects and Sparty's B&W is a strong contender.

For the record the photos can be underground man made structures which does allow the Sub Brit interests into this category.

Cheers

Mike 😉 😉 😉

I'm guessing you need to be attending to enter?

I was going to go but can't make it now.

Not that I'm likely to win or anything........

You need to check the entry rules for photgraphic competions on the HE website http://hidden-earth.org.uk/

To me the saddest thing I have heard is Sparty's printer is u/s and can't afford to have the photos printed proffesionaly wonder if anyone could help her out with this.

I worry that we will get the same old boring entries if that is the case I will end it this year. I will however look to do something for 2011 NAMHO which Shropshire are running

If people not attending HE haven't already made arrangements for getting their photos down there, then if you can get them in the post pretty quick I can hand them in for you if you like. Just PM me for my address.

That's very good of you :flowers:

If I can figure out how to make the colour printer at home work, I shall enter!

No need to PM me your address... I Know Where You Live!

There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those that understand binary and those that do not!

I am following this with some puzzlement.
I think you may well need a holiday/drink/change of pills/BJ

Hope that you are well anyway, why take life seriously?

I have a mission, to teach mine explorers some of the finer points of underground photography. 😉

I would suspect that you have the same problem I have seen with bike racing photos - all the good stuff ends up on the websites of amateurs and wannabes who are trying to sell prints.

I think the internet has sounded the death knell of the amateur, print-copy photographer

professional photographers taking record pictures are using somewhat different criteria, anyway - clarity and specific coverage of what the client wants to see, are their main priorities

''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change .... oh, I don't know, I've still got a lamp like that.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
