We've been offered a trip to the Great Orme mines.

Three potential routes are offered, of which we'd need to pick two so that members could choose the one they wanted to do on the day.

1) Ty Gwyn - Easy manhole entrance and a two hour walk around. Photos here: http://www.goes.org.uk/html/ty_gwyn.html

2) Romans - 60' abseil / SRT some low sections and a little climbing. Photos here: http://www.goes.org.uk/html/romans.html

3) Penmorfa - 160 M Concrete pipe - 800 M walk in water - 100 M walk / climb up into mine system. Photos here http://www.goes.org.uk/html/pen_morfa.html

Suggested dates are a Sunday early to mid June. Probably 8th.

I've not set it up as a calendar event yet in order to ascertain if there is enough interest.

Anybody interest please feel free to post up here and if there is enough interest we can go ahead with it :)

You can read more about the Great Orme mines on their web site here http://www.goes.org.uk/

BCA Insurance would be required for this trip.

Can't make the 8th June (there's a WMS meet that weekend) but could make any weekend in June after that.

Me please :)

Not the weekend in June that the good Colonel can't manage, also bad for me.

'Romans' trip looks good to me - particularly for curing any residual fears of enclosed spaces! 😮

Failing that 'Ty Gwyn' for the amusement of vanishing into a hole in the middle of Llandudno.

It's even more fun emerging from the manhole on a sunny Sunday afternoon when the prom is thronged with elderly strollers!

Especialy so when you're covered in brown mud & your mate announce to passers by that " it's OK, just a bit of trouble with the sewers"!
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

Just for completeness' sake, have a look at this http://www.gomines.co.uk/  which gives the "tourist giude" to the Great Orme mines - quite fascinating!

It is indeed fascinating. Without wishing to start a barney again on the subject it does seem to confirm that secondary mineralization in the oxide zone can be both malachite and azurite. This supports what Peter Williams says in “Oxide Zone Geochemistry” ( I believe the ‘bible’ on the subject). I quote:

These are not considered in the diagram (he is talking about complex hydrolysed species) as its purpose is simply to show how changing p(CO2) regimes may give rise to azurite, malachite or both crystallizing together at equilibrium with either cuprite or tenorite. I won’t say any more because inorganic chemistry I find about as complex as what a woman is thinking.
Anyway, Roy’s answer to my original question concerning this subject would appear to be correct. Now that is a surprise.
🙂

Just to add the Google update seems to have greatly improved the resolution of the area. I'm still looking for the manhole.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

I wouldn't mind doing the trip if I could sort something out with the insurance.

Shall we say Sunday 15th June for this then? Seems to be the preferred date for everybody who has expressed an interest so far.

Anybody else who wants to come please say so. There will be a choice of two trips on the day and. I'll create an event ASAP and link this thread to it.

7 names confirmed so far, thanks everyone :)

Any more takers? Max group size 10 before we need to start looking at doing 2 different trips on the same day. Got about a week or so to confirm total numbers.

Thanks,
Simon

Romans Shaft for preference, second choice Penmorfa Adit. (I've been into Ty Gwyn before.)

Roman's or Penmorfa would suit Timberman and myself just fine too.
While the manhole entrance is appealing the other doesn't sound quite so interesting once you're in.
