My mining interest is widespread but what fascinates me the most is the earliest workings. Been on the tour at Great Orme but nowt like actually seeing more of the place. I wouldn't mind doing some volunteering there, anything like that, does anyone know who I should contact as when I rang them about half a year ago I was told I had the wrong number?

Pointless exercise 😞

The club I am a member of has been trying to arrange a trip there for around a year. We get passed around and nothing actually happens. We had 22 members who wanted to visit and no one actually got a peep inside.

😞 😞 😞

That is a shame, if somewhat annoying. I did email them too and got no reply, pity. I understand why it's a sensitive location but it's a pretty important part of our history...

Are any of the Jowetts still involved with NWCRO? You may be able to nab them on a practice assuming they're still involved with the mines.

If you are interested in the Early Mines then a visit to Parys Mountain on Anglesea is a must.
There was a Parys underground group who maintained a presence at the history centre in Amlwch.

The victorian levels there worked up into Bronze age pit mines which can be seen.

Two of our lads (who are in NWCRO) were with them on the last NWCRO exercise which was in their mine. Made no difference 😞

I don't know any of the groups involved, but it seems like bad form really, if you're not willing to 'show anyone yours' then why should anyone be willing to 'show you theirs' in return 😞

I might have another go though 🙂

Can I try to be kind to them.
They are a long established group who have made important discoveries.
However if they are suffering like many societies from lack of "new blood" then getting helpers and responding will all be down to just a couple of people. :smartass:
It just needs finding the right person to talk to.

I have had an open-ended invite through Steve Lee and Brian Edwards, which I have yet to take them up on. How about I ask if they fancy a visit? Don't want to push my luck so don't all jump and sign up though   Leave it with me, if it's properly organised then it will be fine
Caveat: they are strict on BCA insurance and will need to see cards, which is fair enough

I know several people over That way Rufenig, that would love to learn the system, help out etc. They have been met with the same "leave it with us" reply, and nothing ever came of it.

If anyone knows the group personally it may be useful to point out there are at least a couple of new volunteers in this thread already.

Yes, thanks for all the feedback. If anyone does know the group then mentioning that we're genuinely interested in helping out there then that will show we're more than tourists. It's an extremely important site and the only people that site belongs to are the miners who carved it out thousands of years ago

I think anybody wishing to lend a hand would simply need to join the Great Orme Exploration Society. The website says:

"Membership allows the opportunity for mine exploration subject to the rules of GOES, and attendance at all functions, field trips, meetings etc."

If you already have BCA insurance then the joining fee is reasonably low. Pretty conclusive that you are not tourists if you join.

I joined GOES and they are separate to the Bronze Age workings and their exploration

I think there used to be a bit of friction between the groups which may be part of the issue.

The Great Orme Exploration Society (GOES) and Great Orme Mines (GOM) and two separate entities. GOES is run as a club and GOM is run as a business. The GOES AGM is held at the GOM mine site and both parties are on friendly terms. GOES regularly access shafts/systems within the GOES leasehold containing Bronze Age workings.
And indeed, anybody joining GOES can do the following "Membership allows the opportunity for mine exploration subject to the rules of GOES, and attendance at all functions, field trips, meetings etc."
I hope that hasn't confused things even more 😉

p.s. Don't give up on the trips.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
