Consider your approach LAP. if you call them and say "can i take, like, some photo's innit"
they will probably tell you to stick your camera up your pipe!
However, explain that you are a mining historian conducting research and that their mine will have its own page on a very popular website.....blah blah might get you somewhere! its worked for me!

I will try! But being a self guided tour they wouldn't notice any photos being taken anyway would they? Afterall the tunnels are floodlit, so no need to take suspicous looking flashguns or extra torches, nor a tripod for that matter, but for a viewable set of photos contact would be best!

I'd always ask out of courtesy though. The trip we did in Parys last week they were more than happy for us to photograph, and the photographs appearing here and on other sites are added publicity.

Yes will do! 😉
Dy'a thaink they'd be interested if we pre-arranged a kind of group visit. Perhaps that'll give the impression that we're not just wondering tourists, in serch of some photos to make money out of!

Yes, nice idea

Although the GOES group would be more interesting I think than the tourist part of the mine?

The thing is with tourist mines is that most of the lighting is halogen, giving your photo's a horrible yellow colour.
15 seconds on iso 100 and a blast with LED around the walls will clean it up a little.

Whoops, sorry!

I know what you mean! But it would attract attention! Looking at some pics of other peoples' it'd appear that the lighting in great orme is of the typical yellow/blue/red creepy looking sort.

Do you think they'd react better to a hand written, posted letter

Speak to them on the phone and guage their attitude towards photography, explain how you want to take your pics, and maybe offer to include details in a hand written letter. An SAE may encourage them to reply, and include the website details where they will be able to see their attraction!
