bagged a day off work to do another visit to middlecleuth second sun vein to find the arching has collapsed before browns sump about 50 ft past the bend with the crawl, there was a very small gap at roof height but the arching next to the fall looked like its going too so i stayed clear, needs a braver man than me to dig it out.it was ok 3 weeks ago last time i went down there.

Took a wander into Smallcleugh on Friday. The fall has come from the righthand wall (looking inbye). It was passable but needs some attention as there is also a bad section of unstable roof waiting to come down. Fortunately the wall collapse shouldn't go much further as there is a joint in the arching very close.

Been in today- a bit rough. It'll need some care patching it up. BTW - is it just me or are there more of the furry crystals on the rock than usual.

Funny you should say that about the 'furry crystals' I thought that as well.

Getting spooky, in Feb we went through the SC flats and out via Northend flats and Hard XC. Past the route to the incline flats everything was covered in crystals, they are epsonite. Never seen them in this area before.

I was under the impression that they are normally found in areas with little traffic / air flow ??

I think you'll find its almost the same mechanism as we deal with in old houses when you get salts coming out of old plaster. More likely to be due to a wet winter, now drying out, and drawing salts through the rock. The better the ventilation, the more will form as salts are drawn to the surface. Its a reaction of magnesium in the limestones and shales, with the sulphides in them (pyrite, galena, sphalerite etc) forming magnesium sulphate. I remember my mum finding a lovely bit of it once, many years ago when she came down Smallclough with me as about a 7 year-old. She took it outside and it was raining. By the time we got to the car, she was holding an amorphous lump of rock, minus crystals!!

I'm going to be up in Nent weekend of the 26/27 April, would anyone be interested in meeting up on the Sunday (27th), to have a go at clearing the fall / putting some supports in.

I have various length offcuts of 2x6" joists, so wood is not prob.

Visited the fall on 13th May. The arching and the pack immediately above has collapsed due to ground movement. Some cracking of the arch stone happening here - prob due to the movement of the stope below. Pulled some of the loose roof in and measured up sizes for timber. Can supply timber but need a group to carry in - any offers?

Noticed that a large piece of roof slab ( 2X grand piano) is wedged a metre off the floor just north of the SCXVein/MC1stS west Junction.

Depending when you want to go but I'd be happy to carry some timber in.

Saturday 24th would be fine. Do I propose a time? How about 1030am in the mine yard, next to the woodpile?

I'm free on friday (23rd may) night from about 16.30 could get some timber in then.
As long as you clearly mark what you want taking, happy to take it and just leave it there for you, so there's less to carry if you can get in to do something with it shortly after that?
I'm already committed the rest of that W/E though.
