What's your level of competence (ie SRT ability), what gear do you have (ie ropes etc?)

Hi Pete

Level of competence pretty high mate but unfortunately having to do watered down stuff at the moment due to a bad shoulder injury đŸ˜

The Coniston through trip from Levers water to Hospital level is very fine. Abseil through -pitches are 6m, 29m, 23m and 25m. You obviously have to be up to the SRT, but there’s no other difficulties. Can send more details if that’s of interest.

If SRT isn’t an option, you could spend a nice couple of hours poking around the other Coniston levels. Deep level / Taylors /Flemings / and a few others worth a look in and solid as far as the stopes. Get a copy of Eric Holland’s ‘Coniston copper mines’.
Some interesting and fairly extensive Slate workings on the path up Coniston old man from the copper mines youth hostel. Quite a lot to see - winches, Pelton wheel turbines etc etc

would recommend Force Crag. In the highest level, down the Laporte Incline and out by the mill. Loads and loads to see from old to modern, several hundred feet of vertical descent and no SRT.

There are also some possibilities above Boot where there are 2 or 3 open levels above a fine inclined plane. I haven't been in very far as I didn't have wellies at the time.
Malc.
Rusted and ropey, Dog eared old copy
Vintage and classic or just plain Jurassic
All words to describe me.

Hi Mark,

Is the high level open, as last time I was there it was blocked by a fall? Also thought there was a surface land slide on the level that accesses the bottom of the incline?

its a few years ago since I was last there, so I appreciate the 'heads-up' on that one - don't want to give anyone bad advice! Definitely seek recent knowledge to avoid disappointment!

Unless its been dug out, the No 3 level is buried under tons of debris from the floods and severe weather event that hit several years back.. :(

Likewise, fall on the High Force cross-cut shortly before that, prevents the through trip...was talk of digging that out too-before the floods then arrived..

Rounding it all off, Force Crag is the site of trial mine water remediation scheme funded by Coal Authority and various other parties, coupled with National Trust land owners, so, considerable monitoring, sampling, logging works = for the last several years access been 'fluid' ::)
