Absolutely not. Had a walk up this morning and as you say the GWR wagon is parked in the corridor in the middle of the mill.

Had a good look around as the usual, but it is difficult to see any significant difference since I was up there about 3 weeks ago apart from the usual movement of small items and bits and pieces being scattered from one place to another. Just like scavanging rats do. And that big hole in the roof is getting bigger.

I am pretty certain that a few slab wagons have already vanished from the mill in last 6 months or so.

How would people be looking to remove these? I struggle to see these being an easy item to just lift up and plonk into a landrover, as they weigh a ton. Must be a rather large vehicle, which shouldn't really go un-noticed. How easy/difficult would it be to transport the remaining wagons to Lechwedd for safe keeping in the meantime? It is their property afterall, and they already have plenty of relics knocking around.

The problem with that is it would take a fair bit of Llechwedd man-hours to do that. I have (in last couple of days) asked if they wanted a working party organised to move all wagons outside of mill inside. They are proposing to put large boulders in front of mill entrances. Or at least they are considering that option.

As to how they are getting them out, I have seen trolley tyre tracks in the mill before. Presumably items are dismantled then moved out down the mountain at night.

It would be an idea to put all wagons in one area, possible a corner of the mill and block them off with heavy slabs from the tip.

Yeh that is a good idea, glad thats being dealt with, i'm all for enthusiasts but these acts seem more than a little selfish. And i am amazed anything with GWR on it is still remaining, as it's shockingly sought after.

I am hoping they will do what we have discussed i.e. place boulders across each doorway. I think that might be easier for them than doing it inside the mill due to the problem of getting suitable boulders through the doorways on a vehicle.

Post by DylanW copied from elsewhere:-

Update as of 17-08-2010.

The wagon was taken (stolen) last night.

Who ever took it went to the trouble of cuting it up (presumably with a portible stil-saw contraption) into various parts before taking it. What is interesting / odd is that they left the "flat bed", so presumably they where just after the wheels, Axels (which where in a poor state in my opinion) and the frame which has the GWR stamp on it , and also the hook's attachment.

Oh, also the wrote "RIP" on it aswel, which is very kind of them.

A couple more pics of the wagon - I came across these looking for something else, but it seems I got one of the axlebox as well:

It may help if it ever tips up rebuilt under something else.

Having had a further look at the remains of the wagon on Friday (I will post more info about that on the other thread shortly), it is obvious that not only did they want the wheels and axle boxes, but also they removed the end frames presumably they wanted the buffing gear too.

Had another meeting with Andrew Roberts at Llechwedd yesterday afternoon along with Dafydd Gwyn.

Various ideas and possibilities were discussed. Although we were intending to have a meeting (probably Jan/Feb time) to include other interested parties including an invite to SimonRL from here, we have decided to postpone that for a couple of months. The reason for this is the World Heritage Site bid by the north Wales slate industry sites. Essentially this is a "bid for a bid". The result of the first stage will be known sometime in March. If this "bid for a bid" is successful it will release additional funding for projects within the north Wales slate industry heritage sites. The buildings at Maen Offeren could well be eligible for this. We will be holding a further meeting ourselves immediately after the result is known, then, shortly after that hold a further meeting inviting others. Suggestions so far for invites are SimonRL from here, Steffan ab Owain who is one of the archivists at Gwynedd archives and formerly worked at Maen Offeren, Gwynfor Roberts Gwynedd Council Buildings Conservation Officer. Possibly one or two other representatives too. It has been agreed that any grant applications, etc, etc, will be done by Slate Heritage International. You will recall they are a subsidiary company in the Greaves Group of Companies, who own the two overhead electric locos that are now being stored at WHHR, Porthmadog. That company is already a registered charity so will save a lot on charity set up fees etc.

It was also agreed that any revenue (such as clearing scrap from the mills etc) by volunteers etc will be "ring fenced" for future use on the project.

I would imagine the latest snow has not helped the roofs at Maen Offeren.

Agreed, it was weather not dissimilar to this around the time of the Votty pit collapse last year - albeit IIRC it was still frozen at the time of the collapse.

Thanks for the update on the situation with the meetings JohnnearCfon.

The thread of water wheel powered machinery at the Maenofferen mills reminded me of this thread.

Is there any more rerportable news on this John?

Unfortunately not Simon. It all seems to have gone quiet we still haven't had the next meeting I thought were were having in March. I hoped the decision having been made about the "bid for a bid" for World Heritage status would have moved things along a bit more. I know Dafydd has reminded Andrew more than once.

As soon as there is more news I will report it on here.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
