Makes interesting reading, I can quite see the logic, but I suspect they havn't grasped the fundamental nature of the workings - or their state! Imagine the silt that would be stirred up, and what that suspended silt would do to the rotors, guide vanes etc. of the pump/turbines.... I would imagine it would not be good for the ecology of the two surface reservoirs either!

Certainly an interesting idea, although it might be a sensible idea to have a word with a structural engineer to find out what's going to happen if you keep on filling chambers with water and then emptying them again.

At the back of my mind is the idea that if you keep subjecting rock to repeated pressure loading and release, then it might cause failure.

The obvious example would be Cwmorthin, although that was only flooded once (for a long while) and then drained. I doubt there would have been much effect of either the flooding or the draining, but it's one thing draining a couple of floors over a fortnight (?) and another thing draining perhaps 5 floors over a few hours, repeated once a day.

Also the fact that in order to determine the structural integrity (???) of the chambers and walls one would have to pump out the water in them to start with.... an interesting task. Followed by the exploration... volunteers anyone ? Votty had to abandon a lot of their workings anyway because of falls, hence the blank areas on their later plans.

And me too!

I only ever went down to Floor F. G, H, and I were already flooded (G was in process of flooding) when I first went there.

Interesting article you found there John. I think the idea of windfarms are ok in theory, but look at the ones at Cemaes, Anglesey. They do not provide any local employment at all, and the only people that benifit are the landowners and the generator owners etc. I think it is Lord Stanley at Cemaes. Also the dam things are ugly, and makes the Cemaes look like teletubbies land.
But I suppose that could be said of a lot of modern powersations of all types as they could run automaticaly with no operators due to modern electronics.

The windmills are damned noisy too. When I was looking at moving up here one place I looked at a few miles East of Machynlleth sounded great, until I saw there were windmills on top of the opposite mountain!

Gwynedd CC as the planning authority concerned had some form of consultation exercise on this in June 2003.

Other than the CPRW (Campaign for the Preservation of Rural Wales) response (mainly about the wind power aspect) dated 5/8/03 I don't know what other responses were made to the Council, but I would imagine that they would be available from Gwynedd CC.
