Yes, loads still there including a farely rare slate planing machine.

Depending on the age (and type) of the cable, they have been burning the insulation off some of it, or later plastic covered armoured cable has had been cut into lengths then copper cores been pulled out. It has made a right mess.

I think if it ever got to the stage where the mill could have new doors and could be locked i doubt that the vandals would bother to walk all the way up there when there are plenty of buss shelters to trash which don’t involve a major hike to get to.

I think that kind of thing is what will be discussed with RCAMW and CADW.

I reckon if it begins to look less like a scrap yard it will be treated less like one.

All above is relevant and true. There is also the question of the state of the roof of the mill.

The last winter also took its toll - when I visited in April a whole section had collapsed.

Also the workshop's roof is steadily deteriorating.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

That is the main worry on any building that's falling into disrepair. The roofslates are also something that can be pinched by theives, as a couple of the remaining buildings at Cwmorthin have been subject too. I suppose putting tarpaulins over the worst affected areas i suppose are a temporary solution, like the bell house at Aberllefenni. Which could also give the impression, that the building is being worked on, which theives won't like.

Yes, that is a further, much larger, problem. However, we all feel securing the buildings are the first priority.

One section of the mill roof is has asbestos tiles instead of slates, something I had never noticed in all the years I have been going there, until pointed out to me recently! That section seems to have survived the weather better, and of course, is of no value to thieves.

Presumably that will have to be removed eventually though?

To renovate and restore the whole mill would cost a fortune. And at present there is no money available or offered from any source, nor is there any positive plans nor permission to do so as far as I am aware.
But my thoughts are that it would be possible to restore one half of the left side of the mill by salvaging material and slates from the rest of the mill and other buildings.
It could be sealed off using corrugated steel sheets where the two halves meet etc.
It would be possible to set up a fund asking for donations for specific items etc. Keeping financial records that could be seen by all. Labour would have to be volentary of course.
To renovate the whole mill I think would not be realistic physicaly and financially things being as they are at present with financial cuts made by private industry as well as the goverment.
But before anything can be set up an agreement would have to be drawn up with llechwedd.
As for security. There quite a few of us that would be quite happy to have a walk up to check things over on a regular basis.
Just an idea....

No need to remove it, in fact best not too! If it were to be disturbed/removed specialist contractors would need to be brought in to do it at considerable expense!

It is a little more complicated than that Hymac. Nothing can be removed from any of the buildings or altered without listed building concent, it is not just a case of patching it up by taking bits from elswhere. In fact doing any of the above is a criminal offence I believe!

You are correct in that there are no positive plans, that is why we met with Andrew Roberts a couple of weeks ago. We shal have to see how things progress.

I would suggest a meeting with interested people but need to know a bit more about Llechwedd's desires and what happens with the CADW and RCAHMW contacts first.

Just to let everyone know, Dafydd has a meeting with Royal Commision next week the buildings and their security is going to be discussed.

I have a meeting tomorrow with Andrew Roberts (at his request). I haven't heard yet about any meeting with CADW, maybe I will hear tomorrow.

I stumbled across this thread just now.

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?t=530

Quite enligtening. I will try and find the thread on ME to which it refers.

Once a little bit more is known I am going to suggest a meeting of interested people is called, presumably in Blaenau, or Porthmadog. Thinking in advance, any idea where such a meeting could be held?

Depends on the number of people I guess. If not to many, try to get a small meeting room somewhere like the Oakeley Arms, or closer to home, somewhere in Blaenau.

John, you sort out somewhere to have a meeting. You know I for one am interested in getting something sorted before it is too late.

I hadn't forgotten you Hymac!

I will start finding out which pubs in Blaenau have meeting rooms next week. Come to that, are there any "non-pub" meeting rooms in Blaenau does anyone know?

John if you cannot sort out a meeting room or whatever at a pub. Our works canteen at porthmadog would be ok to seat about 20 people for free. But has no bar, only a kettle, fridge and a microwave.

I think the man to speak to is called John Jones and he runs most of the council commercial spaces.
PM me for a phone number
