The information I have states that it was an Iron Mine.

Quote from a book I have
'A mine at Drws-y-nant near Dolgellau was also worked as a deep open trench at least as early as 1838, because the name Tyllau-mwn, meaning mine shafts, appears on the ordinance Survey maps of that date. It was worked again about 1880. The output of pisolitic ore from all sources reached its highest figure in 1857 when it was 80,000 tons. For a few years after 1908 it varied between 10,000 and 14,000 tons but by 1925 all the mines had closed.'

You could be right. Bick mentions tyllau mwyn as being possibly the Friar's coat mine that was worked for copper in the 1770's. He then goes on to mention references by the Geological Survey to a Tyllau Mawr reworked in 1878 and 1910 fo oolitic ironstone and an opencut was described in 1920. When he visited there he found copper, iron and a little lead. He then stated "The site of the operations mentioned by the geological survey was uncertain" I just went with the first description (assuming it is Friar's Coat).

I keep meaning to go up there and have a look, but it always seems to be misty when I have the time to spare.

Have you been to the Lead mines below the waterfall in the woods between Dinas Mawddwy and the 'Bwlch'?

No I haven't but it's another one on the list. Is there anything much to see?
Across the other side of the valley up a cwm is Red Dragon Mine SH837139 (supposedly Gold, or that's what they told the investors). There is remains of a crusher house and an adit that leads to a vein of pyrite rich shales. (The air's a bit suspect).

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
