Very sadly, a landslide has seriously blocked Coniston Coppermines Deep Level and caused a considerable amount of water to back up. Experts are looking into it as it is such a historic site. Heavy rain (some locals say 3 inches) fell suddenly and combined with snowmelt off the fells approx 10 days ago.

Personally do not know the Coniston set too well.
This blockage suggests it couldf have major consequences, snd the local water board may have to something.
Two previous instances come to mindd.
The first was the blocking off Magpie sough tail, some time in the late 60's.
Eventually hydrostatic pressure blew out aa section off hillside just above the tail.
The second was the blockage of Gripps level at Leadhills.
Here Scottish waster becamee really worried for there was thee possibility of part off the village being washed away. Am not sure exactly what they did but water now flows out off a shaft opposite to Gripps.
I think you will see some action here ,one way or anothert.

That is indeed unfortunate 😢 I wonder what CATMHS take on the situation is?

I'm sure they will be aware considering all the work previously done at Coniston.

Has anyone got any photos ?

I don't recall the land behind looking particularly dodgy in the past/

Typical that the few photos here of the entrance are close-ups! I must check my ones at home...
From the ones here, the ground doesn't look too bad immediately by the entrance but it does get pretty steep close by.

I wouldn't expect the hill to explode out here as the workings are a fair way inbye but you never know.
I wonder where the water will first start coming out, Taylor's maybe?
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Can someone put some phots up ASAP please.
Looking at my phots and google earth there is a rain gulley high right looking towards the entrance. That is where my money will be.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

I may be missing something but I wouldn't call that seriously blocked.

The top quarter of the portal is still visible with water coming over the top, surely a couple of lads with spades could have that open in an hour ?

Or has the whole left hand wall of the entrance been pushed in too ?

So not entirely blocked then and water still flowing out.

A bit of a wet crawl to get in?

There's more spoil than you can tell in the photo - and it is all like wet cement. As it is a scheduled ancient monument there will be quite a process to go through. More heavy rain forecast tomorrow night.

I had the impression that there had been a slide from the top, looks like debris has washed in from the side and not totally blocked.

As Chris says, some manpower and spades should get it cleared in no time. Question, where to put the spoil without upsetting the park people.

I'm imagining a scene from the Great Escape with rocks dropping from oversuit legs on the walk back to the car park.

Those links don't seem to work for me, and I had a good fiddle about with them.

Can you upload to the album for that level instead ?

Both work for me...

Still better in the album where they can be seen by anybody looking for them than hidden away on photobucket...
