The second was the blockage of Gripps level at Leadhills.
Here Scottish waster becamee really worried for there was thee possibility of part off the village being washed away. Am not sure exactly what they did but water now flows out off a shaft opposite to Gripps.
I think you will see some action here ,one way or anothert.
Just had a look on Google, got an interesting page saying:
http://www.gowanbank99.freeserve.co.uk/mine/gripps.html
Water is still flowing from the air shaft (shaft 6) and one of the other shafts (shaft 5), there difference in level between shaft 6 and the Gripps Level outlet is approx 20m. In wet periods water also now emerges from the Horse Level on the other side of the river to Gripps Level
http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Gripps-Level-Lead-Mine/ There are a few more drainage adits other than Gripps and Magpie which are also in similar situations, with signficant amounts of water presssure acting on blockages, removing the blockage will usually cause outrush of water and a pollution incident (not all pollution is a lovelly tomato soup colour). Any water will find its own way out at some point - might even remove blockages in the process
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos
When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks
