Years ago I managed to get as far as South Shaft from the portal, via a tortuous route traversing the flooded stopes.
I have no idea whether that route is still open.

You just walk in ... a bit wet now though.
And as for suicidal diving, it has been dived on a few occasions, by me amongst others although my paltry efforts are as nothing compared to the 170m reached back in 2002!
