Apologies for the totally :offtopic: request, but does anyone have any idea where this could be ?

Its the only potentially identifiable site in a box of glass plate negatives i've aquired.

There are some portraits from the box in my Flickr photostream, but none of those really hint at a location. http://www.flickr.com/photos/11065676@N00/

Do you know if the previous owner of the house was aged and may have had them stored in there for eons ?

Also, do you know the location of the house (town) they were found in ?

If both answers are positive, you could google for old photos of that (and neighbouring) areas.

I got them locally in the Cleveland area, but its certainly nowhere I know around here.

Thats why i've opened it up to a national forum, it could be anywhere.

That building in the background looks a bit like Jarrow monastery.

Yes, I can certainly see where you're coming from with that, and with the bridge next to it. I think you might have hit the nail on the head.

Looking at an 1896 town plan and there are two rows of buildings next to it (I think that second image needs to be flipped horizontally)

Yes, i've emailed a expert from Jarrow who has a website featuring hundreds of images. Hopefully he might be able to tell me even more.

As a footnote to this and the wonders of the internet, now that we know its Jarrow this faint image of a ship has been identified by the local expert as the RMS Mauretania leaving Jarrow for a trial in September 1907

You know, when I was a kid this would have been totally impossible. I had a good look at your photostream and thought he's completely wasting his time there.

This global network is absolutely amazing.....

PS you need to give Dave a call. He needs your help.

I've donated the box of glass plates to the chap from Jarrow with the photo website.

Maybe next I start on the huge book of photos of random hills and lakes in the 1930s.....

As a further footnote, it now appears with the help of the locals we can even put names to faces.
This photo of the same people on the same day has been published in a book which names them as Jane Elizabeth Hill and her children Raymond, Florrie and Lillie taken in Jarrow 1905

Even me being a 'child of the internet' has been amazed to get this far in such a short time.
