Does anyone have any info on some mines near Holwick in Teesdale. They don't appear to be lead mines. On old maps they are written as "Old Quarry" & "Old Tips" but they are definely adits. They are located nr the Tees below Wynch Bridge and above Scoberry Bridge, gr ny907 274 ish
Geology:
the study of rocks & similar substances (minerals n such) that make up the Earth''s surface.
Minerals:
are the building blocks of rocks. They are a naturally occuring, inorganic, solid, crystalline substance which has a fixed structure. (and some of them are really pretty)

Yes, but although it says trial, do you know what they were trialing for?

Lead originally but veins were mostly Fe/Zn. Last tried for Zn in 1940s but not considered enough to work.

Possibly zinc, for some reason there is a mine located east of Hudeshope Beck about half a mile east of Skears limekilns called Wynch Bridge Zinc Trial on AN, no photos or details but I suspect it's in the wrong place and may be a duplicate of the one Morlock gave the link to.

Jim

Apologies Buckhill, I didn't see your post before I sent mine.
