Dear All,

New to the site but no stranger to industrial heritage, earth-moving machines, steam powered stuff.

Really fascinated at the prospect of being able to explore a disused mine/quarry.

I'm not into caving, potholing and the like so wouldn't be too keen on a 'documentary' style exploration.

A disused mine working with bits of kit, rails etc in situ would be right up my street.

I'm in Leicester, don't have a problem travelling (up to three hours away) and I'm reasonably fit.

Please could someone let me know who I can speak to or email on the forum to get involved on a mine visit.

Really looking forward to receiving some replies.

Thanks.

On the home page, right hand side are a list of trips planned. I believe there is one for beginners to a slate mine in North Wales in the New year. This would be a normal walk-in type trip with no need for SRt / ropes etc

EDIT: Sorry not listed as a trip but keep an eye out for what's planned in 2009.

Also, you may want to check out the recommended kit requirements document towards the top of the home page.

And I am sure that many of the other posters will have good suggestions / ideas / planned trips that they'll reply with later.

You are also likely to find a number of members in your area who will give you some info on more local stuff planned.

We're a friendly enough bunch

people like ICLOK and Spitfire, amongst others, are into there IA stuff including steam powered things.

It might also be worth registering with mine-explorer.co.uk as you will find a large number of AN memebers are also on ME regularly. (both great websites)

😉

Hi Liquidator
There are a couple of us that are not too far from you. So you are very welcome to tag along sometime soon.
It is unfortunate that although Derbyshire isn't too far away, there is very little in the way of artefacts, so your 3 hours travelling time will be adequate for pretty much all of north and mid Wales

Excellento Barney.

Done a lot of walking in the Peak District and have come across various big holes in the ground and slits in the hillsides. Agree with you that there's not a lot to see. Some of them were lead mines and were worked out as long ago as the late 1700s!

Girlfriend fished me out of them before I got stuck 😉

Thanks again.

For an easily accessible working still with rails and bits of kit inside to take someone new to exploration round, you can't go far wrong with Holme Bank chert mine in Bakewell - well, you could get lost in the workings, I suppose! If a few of us are interested, a visit could be easily arranged.

BTW, it's not so much that there is a general lack of artefacts in the Derbyshire mines, but more that they tend to be in the less accessible ones....

And a closely guarded secret in some cases!

Good call AR, an organised bash is a great idea, nice one ... :flowers:

All sounds potentially top notch to me folks. Please can someone keep me posted if a trip is on the cards in the new year.

Brilliant.

I'd go along with Holme Bank being an excellent trip to an easy and interesting site. You should enjoy it with a knowledgable guide.

This is reminding me that we really must work out something of a calendar of events for 2009.

In addition to the regular beginner events that went down very well in 2008, is there anywhere people particularly want to go/see? Or anybody who wants to volunteer to arrange a specific event or trip :flowers:

I suspect we can have a trip to Cwmorthin (Blaenau Ffestiniog) if that's wanted?

:stupid: I feel like dick dastardly chasing liquadator across forums and asking the same questions.

I did register a while ago 😢 but it obviously didnt work, so i have just been lurking like a troll in the corner grrrrring to myself.

Anyway it looks like i,m sorted now and a paid up member.
I,m not into squeezing myself through a flooded chamber up to my ears , its the history of the working class and undue hardships that went underground that interests me.
For many years i have worked in print design and photography. there isnt much i dont know about photoshop and i have been a life long nikon user.
Its a d200 and associated wide angles and macros now.

Based on the wirral so within easy distance of north wales.

I don't have srt knowledge but i,m fit and agile 10 1/2 stone and most important not afarid of the dark.

welcome and good health to all here.

Hi Pace :)

Indeed, we'll have a couple of 'beginner' trips next year - it'd be interesting to see how a Nikon SLR performs in the dark: I've got a D80, but it's not allowed underground! 😉

Hyperfocal?! No, I can't use it underground because it was a present from swmbo and it was only given to me on the sole condition that it stayed in daylight! 😮

Whereabouts are you from, Pace?
