Vanoord/Simon,

I've just received an e-mail and I realise I've double booked myself. Bug--- Not going to make it I'm afraid will have to be more careful. The first Saturday of the month I try to be with the PDMHS. Sorry, will check later on in the year.

Hope this allows enough time for a replacement

Peter.

I would prefer the long trip but at the same time I am coming to make photographs. So ideally I would like to be in the trip with the most photographers. cheers

Just wondering if anyone else is coming from London and would be interested in sharing a car(petrol money)?

A short equipment list!

Lighting - preferably a head torch and a hand torch; plus a spare of some sort and enough batteries for each to last about 12 hours (although we should be no more than 5-8 if we go all the way into the mountain)

Sturdy clothing and footwear: pretty much as you would for a day on the hills, but old stuff that you don't mind getting dirty. Waterproofness is not a priority, but I find a cheap pair of waterproof trousers helps keep the dirt out (and I have a habit of sitting down in wet places). Wellies are adequate, with a good sole as there are a couple of slippery bits. And GLOVES! (gardening gloves or similar)(Thank you Walrus!)

A helmet is preferable, in case you bump your head on the ceiling.

Food and drink - again, allow for several hours: a mix of chocolate (fast energy replenishment) and sarnies/pies/pasties (slow burn) plus drink.

(by now you'll have twigged that a rucksack of sorts is a good idea!)

Cameras! If you want pics that come out decently, a tripod is an absolute must (mine is the cheapest cheap that Tesco do, a Hama Star 42). There will be plenty of opportunities for taking photos :)

__

Right then, what have I forgotten? 😉

I'd also suggest:
Gloves (if you've got soft gentle office workers hands like me) - slate is dirty & sharp!
A fleece or jumper or lightweight waterproof for the walk to the entrance - you'll be fine once inside but the walk to and from the mine is likely to be chilly! - a woolly hat if you really feel the cold.

Oh, and the combination for the lock!

That's the one, up as far as the road goes, and just before it turns in to a track. We'll keep an eye out for people in helmet and lamps though 🙂

Here's the car park: http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.990021&lon=-3.963645&z=18&r=0&src=msl

SimonRL and I will appear in either a green Discovery or (more likely) a black Freelander.

Nobody seems to have opted for a shorter version of the trip, so given numbers, I'd expect it to take between 5 & 8 hours depending on how many odd little corners we delve into 😉

I'm not very good with names even when people are using their real ones, but when everybody has a username as well, its a nightmare and I remain confused about who was who today. Anyway, it was a fantastic day out or rather under; informative, dark, exciting, messy, and hard work - just great. So many, many thanks to our leaders and sorry I had to dash off but my wife isn't well and I had to get back to take the dog out for a walk and cook the dinner. Hope to see you all again at some point.

Thanks Griffo, glad you enjoyed it.

It's sometimes a little difficult to balance things between exploring and photo stops, or knowing how much in the way of the history people might be interested; but I sincerely hope everybody who came along yesterday enjoyed it.

I know exactly what you mean about names / usernames. This was the first trip we 'organised' as such, so any feedback like this to help make future ones even better is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Simon

Thanks Simon / Vanoord and team. I have bits of the mine but it was great to be free of the navigation and with guys who know it so well. Thanks again.
I felt totally out classed on the photography and was scared to get out my camera phone. The good news it is great to be with folk who will share their photo and just have a real love of the mine.
PROBLEM For my log I need to know where we went. Has anyone got a quick list of the route?

A few pics from Saturday:

Walrus (I think) walking along DE floor

A similar shot (albeit without Walrus), but lit by putting the Fenix into the water and freezing my hand off! I'm quite surprised by how different the photos are:
