A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Cwmorthin for beginners (1)
Date & time: 05/04/2008 at 10:00

PLEASE NOTE - this trip is now fully subscribed and if there are any others who wish to attend (other than those already signed up via this page - http://www.aditnow.co.uk/events/?uid=17 ) then places will only be available if somebody drops out. A similar trip will also be held in July - http://www.aditnow.co.uk/events/?uid=20

Details: The first of a series of "easy" trips.

This is intended as a gentle day out to Cwmorthin slate mine, for those who haven't been there before. The trip will take about 4-5 hours and will not involve ropework. You may, however, get wet!

Cwmorthin is one of Wales' largest underground slate workings and the trip will pass through areas first worked in the nineteenth century and include some of the last sections worked in the 1930s before the mine closed at the start of World War II.

Depending on the group, the trip will pass along underground haulage inclines and pass by abandoned bridges, trucks and the Cabans where the workers gathered to eat and share stories.

This trip is open to all, but is intended or those who have either not visited Cwmorthin before or who wish to have a gentle introduction to mine exploration.

Hi. Can you list the minimum equipment that you would advise for people considering this trip to have. Thanks, Niall. 🙂

Room for one more? I've been to a couple of the working weekends but havn't really had a proper look around the mine itself, just down the incline and back up the 'stairs'.

My personal minimum:
Minimum would really be a helmet (builders helmet would do)
caplamp + backup light (keeps both your hands free to climb round stuff)
boilersuit or clothes you dont mind wrecking
Cheap gloves - slate is sharp!
wellies (gives good grip - boots are ok-ish but trainers are not very good at all)

Really you'll need two layers of clothes to keep the heat in once you get wet (the bottom of the incline is over CWD (critical welly depth). Driking water and muchies are nice but not essential.

There's room for you indeed :)

The trip will include a look at the bridges of the old vein as well as the back vein and the workings off the Chamber 34 incline. If there's demand (and people are suitably fit), we can also extend the trip a bit further...

I'm tempted by this one - I grew up in the area, know the surface of the Croseor area fairly well, and have always hankered to go down some of the mines and see what is left to be seen...

I've got to check that the date is OK, but could I go on the list as a possible please?

Hokay, put yourself on the list - I've removed myself but I'll be there anyway. Numbers will probably be 10 anyway (I'll probably be bringing two along as well) and we may well split into two groups.

Look forward to seeing you - it'll be a good trip 🙂

brilliant! cheers.
Just wondering if it will be ok to take photographs with an old large format camera - i mean in terms of people having to wait around for the long exposure. All will it be all right if i take the shot then catch up with the group. Sorry about all the questions it's just because this is all new to me. I really appreciate your help.

thanks.

I see the map ref is recorded on the trip details, so even I should be able to find it. Where do you recommend parking ? Last time I was up there climbing and I parked in the top car parking area the car got broken into, but if that's where you're proposing to meet, no problem. Or is it 10am at the mine ?

10am at the car park in Tan-y-Grisiau. Although these are are reports of break-ins at the car park, there's usually a few people around over a weekend so the risk is lowered. Hopefully by then the weather will be better, so that should make the place a bit busier.

Given the numbers showing interest, I suspect we'll split into two groups at some point, with a longer trip to see the further reaches and a shorter one which could also be used for photography experiments 🙂

Right - I'm booked into the B+B down the road (I'm NOT sleeping in the hut until the central heating is installed) so I'll be walking up to the car park for 10.am

Just a gentle bump for this event, now a few days away.

Given the likely numbers, we may split into two groups, one doing a shorter trip and the other a longer trip, right through the workings which will be a little bit more tiring.

Does anyone have any strong preferences for either a shorter or a longer trip, or does anyone have to be out by a certain time?

My preference would be the longer trip (as I'd like to see lots!) but I'm built for comfort, not for speed - what do you reckon?

Hi,
I would like to go for the longer trip.
I'm used to suffering!

Thanks

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
