I have been exploring in the Wigan area a while now on and off but wasn't aware of this, I came across it on Panoramio so went and got a couple of time exposures. What a superb thing!

Now that's impressive and much better than some of the nonsense which passes for public art in this country.

Presumably this is the fan which was brought back into use temporarily in 1985 powered by steam while the main fan underwent maintenance.
Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Here's the fan in situ in 1981:
🔗Sutton-Manor-Coal-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-037[linkphoto]Sutton-Manor-Coal-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-037[/linkphoto][/link]
And the engine end:
🔗Sutton-Manor-Coal-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-042[linkphoto]Sutton-Manor-Coal-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-042[/linkphoto][/link]

The engine was "hot" i.e. on standby when I saw it, and both compressors in steam, though only one actually working. Both steam winders hard at it, the skip winder being particularly impressive.

Inside the Wigan Pier museum you will find the fan engine has also been rebuilt and possibly in steam (?) - I've got a couple of shots of that somewhere. Need to dig them out. I thought I'd already posted them on here but can't find them now!

I'm sorry Chris, I get far too carried away with historical accuracy and good taste. Here we are 50 years ago since the closure of North Skelton Mine and to remind us of that historic event we have an erection near the site representing a mine headgear, which was also photographed by Ian.
North Skelton was unique in Cleveland for having the winding pulleys one above the other, but don't let such accuracies get in the way of a quality public artwork.
But I would prefer good quality ...

I used to pass Trencherfield's Mill every morning in the late sixties and remember one guy telling me about some of the big machinery in there. At the time I thought that there may have been an element of exaggeration in what he was telling me. A few years later I saw it.....big stuff allreet! 😮

Just uploaded a set of photos I took at the pier when the Sutton Manor engine had been restored. From an entry on the Geograph website posted by Chris Allen, I understand it has now been removed:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1753734

One of the compressors went to Chatterley Whitfield:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1628936

There are a fair number of colliery (and other) steam engines on this site as well as the collieries themselves. Might be worth linking the approriate database entries to them ?

Cheers
