Hi

Anyone planning on a trip into Coniston Copper Mine?

I'll be in the Lakes on a Mountain Rescue training weekend and I'd like to make a visit Friday evening while nothings going on.

I've been caving for a few years, and have all my own Kit.

Any recommendations for a solo exploration are also welcome in case If I end up billy no mates

If you end up solo I would leave SRT out of the equation.

Hospital Level is an interesting walk through with no special requirements, you could also go in Deep Adit and through the old LMQT dig as far as the pitch down to the water level.

If you fancy a good walk, go up to the Old Man Slate Quarries.

I have to agree with Roy, the SRT parts of the copper mines are very interesting but not the best place to be without backup.

Lots of false floors which are quite actively collapsing.

Thanks Roy/Chris

Hospital Level sounds like a good Solo potter, Some of the false floors look absolutely lethal!

If I dont manage to get a guide book, any tips for finding the correct entrance? Can you Ab down the Hospital Shaft?

There was a field guide by the late Eric Holland published a few years ago. (Moorebooks?)

The levels are easy to find, park near the youth hostel.

Looking up over on the right hand valley is the arched entrance to deep level. There are other levels higher up.

Walking up the track on the left hand valley the track follows Levers Water Beck, you pass the water treatment plant and the track will take you right to Hospital Level. Its just a walk in same as deep level, but water up to your knees.
There is quite alot of exploration that can be done there without any special equipment.

If you want to take a look, try this:
http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

It beats Google Earth hands down and it also uses National Grid not the stupid Latitude/Longitude 'Ship at sea' rubbish. You will be surprised how good this is, the satelite image is very clear.

Hospital Shaft is sealed at surface

Thanks for that Roy, I did read it a few days earlier but I got sidetracked with that App

There is this little app if your interested in the caves of Mendip that's quite interesting

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
