There is no Hebden Moor Mine near this Grid. There is Prosperous Level at SE05610 67100

The person who added 'Hebden Moor Lead Mine' to the DB is no longer a member. As both Hebden and the one you suggest seem to be at the same location, it could simply be a error in the mines name?

British Mining No.60 mentions Old Prosperous Level as being on the Bycliffe Vein in the section on the Grimwith Mine.

But just to muddy the waters, Dunham seems to call that location Game Ing Level.

A bit confusing but according to this site Hebden Moor Mine is very close to Bolton Gill SE026652. Is this the same Bolton Gill as entered on here?http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walks/walk_b/2610/

Not really my area of expertise (is anything)

Dunham says

"The only successful mine in Hebden Moor was on a continuation of Cockbur Vein from Yarnbury, where it was possible to follow the Bearing Grit under cover by means if an adit from Coalgrove Beck"

OS map shows a level at SE 032670 which i'm guessing is that one

"Bolton Gill or Bottle Level at 850ft OD"
Presumably the one at SE026652 on the OS Map

"Charger Level NE of the dressing floor" and "Landshaw Level" no specific locations but I can speculate which ones they are from the map in book.

Hebden Trial Level at SE028629

Ah, not according to the person who started the thread.
Clearly an area that needs some investigation.

There are two Cupola Lead Smelters in the DB. Always possible of course. The one entered by Jimbo is the one in the relevant area.

Well, it all gets complicated up there! Half the problem is that a mine may cover many acres, with several named levels and shafts within the mine. And the mine next door may have features with similar names. Often the levels etc get added to the database as seperate features. I'm not sure if there has ever been any consensus on a way around this.

This is Lanshaw Level, presumably the one in Dunham Chris:

Unfortunately most of the other levels around there don't have such handy labels. There is another level in Gateup Gill that would head towards Hebden Moor, Tag Bale Level. On the opposite side of the valley to Red Scar Level. Once again, without the book, I won't speculate.

P.S. Tom, I sent you a mail on Mine Explorer re your Perseverence Level pics.

Hi Chris - What have I stirred up?

Charger is at SE 0263 6501
The Hebden Trial Level used a big waterwheel to drive an air compressor.

Some years ago I got a bee in my bonnet about where the old mines were on Grassington Moor. I ended up talking to Mike Gill of NMRS, offering to use a GPS to give exact locations. He gave me a list of c50 grid refs to get on with. As you say, the more you pole about, the more questions rise.

If you use Memory Map I could give you a copy of the overlay - or would a doc with all the grids & comments be more useful?

Thanks for the Dunham bits - that will take a bit of time to assimilate.
Cheers

A real can of worms for sure, need some definite answers on each of the locations mentioned before I correct anything on the database here or on ME. The doc with all the grids & comments would be really helpfull as a starting point Tom, would you be able to post it on here or e-mail a copy to us head scratchers ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cheers,

Jim

PS There are two Cupola Smelt Mills carnkie, the well known one at Grassington Moor & another at Marrick ๐Ÿ˜‰

I certainly do use Memory Map.
Just pop it in the post to the address I emailed you from.

Cheers.
