Someone recently attempted to get through the steel gate protecting the entrance of this mine which was provided courtesy of Cleveland Potash Ltd. No damage was done so if the person involved is reading this it will tell them how to get access to the mine properly.
Coate Moor mine worked for a few years in the 1870s then was abandoned and access only became possible again in recent years although of an 'informal' nature. The landowner was vaguely aware of this so when the opportunity arose to request official access he sought independent advice and then agreed subject to certain conditions, one of which was restricted access to prevent accidents.
Consequently Cleveland Mining Heritage Society created a much safer entry point and visits the site regularly to maintain it and carry out an artefact survey. With unrestricted access relics were starting to disappear and arrows were being spray painted on walls.
By prior arrangement we take visitors underground after they have signed a disclaimer indemnifying the landowner in case of possible accident. We ensure they have adequate equipment and can point out much of the history and features to be seen easily missed in the dark and the damp. No one has been refused a visit although some visitors have requested an early exit!
Any potential visitors are requested to contact me via the CMHS website and a suitable date can be arranged.
Yes, I'll have it - what is it?
