Phil, these are drainage culverts - I think the ganister was initially worked opencast and the waste deposited on the downslope side, but given the streams coming down from the springs on Wharncliffe crags they needed to do something to stop the opencast getting flooded in winter and so they built these.

I did wonder about that, as there seemed to be some faint scalloping present on some blocks. The tunnel curved off invitingly into the distance, but I was on my own with no helmet or light, and it was getting dark!

I was startled to see this photo as I have an identical one, plus its twin showing where it curves invitingly away in the opposite direction. Taken in 2010. It is indeed a drainage level and some years ago I came across on the internet some brief details and a photo of the outfall (but failed to make a note of the url and could never find it again!). Always meant to go back with helmet and lamp. There is what appears to be a collapsed adit further to the north below the end of the opencast.

I think there's more than one adit, probably blown in on abandonment. Those ganister mines really need a full survey, apart from the incline and engine beds I've seen the ruins of small buildings (which I shouldn't call coes as they're away from the Peak!) and other features. So many things to record, so little free time....

How very true!
Ray Battye's book
The Forgotten Mines Of Sheffield
mentions the Wharncliffe gannister mines but considering the fairly extensive remains up there he says very little about them. As you say AR they really merit a full survey.
