Hi, I discovered this site whilst working on my family history. My family lived around Halviggan in St Stephen in Brannel for generations. (Surname, Martin/Martyn). Many were clay miners or like my G.G. Grandfather Jos Martin, carriers/carters.
I also have an interest in mines of Butte, Montana where my Grandfather, Joe Martin and his wife Florrie lived 1914 - 1920. I have some wonderful old photos of Butte and its mines sent by Grandad back home at that time. I did attempt to interest Wheal martyn Museum in some old photos of my Great Grandfathers Martin and Hambly at work in the mines but got nothing back. Would be interested to share anything on the above. Kay S

If you have any photos of the clay district in the past, please feel free to upload them here and we will try to identify locations, if you are unsure.

Wheal Martyn has many documents and is probably still trying to catalogue them all. It is a pity they did not reply to you, although they say that they cannot deal with genealogical enquiries.

I work with one or two Martyns, but that surname is more common than "smith" in the clay district.

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
