I don't feel generally unwelcome on here. Au contraire! But this specific 'why are women invading my world' post did make me feel unwanted. And as I said, I don't think spitfire had that in mind when he wrote it, but anyway, I figured it would be good to speak up. If you want societal change you should be willing to put some footwork in!

I think we have more pressing issues which are more deserving of our time and money, but yes, I think calling it a person-hole is one small step in the right direction. I remember once being in Cwm and someone suggesting we go down the manway, upon which Sinker suggested it was a personway. That was very nice of him! If this sort of stuff happens more often it might become a bit more of a natural thing for everyone to phase out the fifties mentality...

Without wishing to be pedantic, a 'manway', 'chairman', 'manhole' is already gender neutral.

The OED app (sorry) gives eleven non-slang definitions. Six are explicitly male, three have a strong male connotation, and two are gender-neutral. So I would say altogether the word 'man' is far from gender-neutral! :smartass:

Regarding ladderways and such; would passages such as the one leading down to Compressor Chamber in Cwm (or up away from it) have had ladders in them? Or the one that leads from lake level near OVI to the top of the staircase? They don't seem steep enough. But it might have been efficient...

Surely only one suitable definition is required? For example, the definition of shaft covers (amongst other things) a metal cylindrical object used to transfer rotational power, and a vertical cavity as found in a mine. When I am abseiling down a shaft, it matters not that there is an alternative (and irrelevant) definition when describing my activities.

The definitions are alternatives, they do not conflict or overrule each other. One just chooses the most appropriate one for the occasion.

I shall continue to refer to the individual in charge of a meeting as the chairman, and the object on which they place their posterior the chair.

Should a male take the role in the future and want to be called chair, chairman, chairperson, or chairwoman, then I suppose we should call him whichever he prefers. One respects the person for what they want. Why would you do otherwise? If someone is performing a role out of altruism, then why would you not do this, simply out of courtesy? Why should one's personal preference be more important than the choice of the person who actually fills the role?

The steep descent to the head of the compressor in chamber 33 on DE floor in the Old Vein was originally equipped with a wooden staircase - the inclination was not steep enough to merit a ladder. There used to still be a few fragments of the staircase when I first visited in the early 1980s. For comparison, rather more survives of a broadly comparable wooden staircase on the east side of chamber 34 between floors F and G in the Old Vein.

I can't recall having seen remains of a staircase or ladder in the short narrow steep shaft between the head of chamber B1 West in the Back Vein and Lake Level. My impression is that it may have been equipped with a chain. Graham may well be able to clarify.
