Loved the 'human counterweight' as the boiler throat plate was fed into the furnace... and the manky rope sling holding the cylinder block as it was lowered between the frames!

Real Men's Work, that!

right, off for my morning decaffeinated grande latte with cinnamon and gluten-free non-dairy foam

Nice vid, brings back some memories.:)

The human counterweight technique is unofficially still in use .
I can still remember the frantic sledge hammering if a crane wheel tyre stuck half way on.;D

I've been part of the counterbalance team feeding 8ft long x 9inch thick steel billets into the furnace in the boilershop smithy at Horwich. Bloody hot when they lifted the doors.
Even hotter still when we came to fish it out and swing it over to the press. The shop crane was fixed to the wall, and could swing 180°. Travel on the boom was manual push or pull. Vertical lift was hydraulic using water pressurised from the boilershop
The combined heat from the furnace and billet made your face sting and your overalls steam. Interesting work and happy days as a spotty apprentice.

There was another film on the same page showing a 7 day teardown and rebuild of a steam loco. Rebored too in 7days!
