On a more sensible note, that reminds me of a trip through Coniston with the Colonel, when he promised me that that there were no more ascents after I'd struggled up something about 30' tall.

About an hour later, we arrived at the bottom of a rope that vanished into the darkness, way, way above us. The Colonel cheerily told me he'd "forgotten" about this particular ascent earlier...

Unfortunately, by the time I'd caught up with him - at the top - I was entirely incapable of berating him and merely slumped to the ground...

Damned fine trip, though

Up the two foot RC pipe in Ashgill Head
About 4 inches of airspace and 70 or 80 feet in length. I got about 60 feet up it before silt made it to narrow to continue.
The water dam's up ahead of your body and the water level rises the further you progress.
Egress my means of a rope around your ankle and a couple of people hauling you out.

Persuaded fuzz to have a go as he is a small fella. He got to the other end only to discover its blocked with boulders.

The 'ring tunnel under Zossen Wunsdorf was amusing. Lying on my back, sinking slowly into the sand looking at cracked reinforced concrete pressed on my chest made me think..."why am i doing this..." still fun though, even with evading the ex stasi security guard!!

As for the toughest, anything less than 6ft tall is a pain in the neck

There are a couple of epic adit systems in Cornwall.

There is one which probably has about 2 miles of tunnel, with the longest distance being about 1300m. The first/last section is probably in the order of 4x2ft and the bottom 2ft is filled with fast flowing water. This section is about 400m long and is utterly punishing.

The first time I did it, I was physically broken for about a week.

Full Nentead Traverse - Caplecleugh to Haggs. You have to do the whole lot, never mind cutting it short at Brownley Hill !

Didn't we once discuss the Nenthead Extended Traverse ?

i.e. the normal Caplecleugh to Haggs but with the Brownley round-trip in the middle ?

Now that would be epic and likely to finish someone off.

It was mildly damp. In fact I think my lungs still contain a good pint or two of water from it even now...

Interesting discussion.

All flat out crawls are difficult especially since often you do not have the option of turning around and so you have to come out feet first!
In my opinion one that takes some beating was the original way into the the Hudgill Burn Cavern. When this was first discovered by CAT entry was via a tortuous side ways crawl.i.e.you could only make progress by crawling on your side! The passageway also turned through 90 degrees at least twice! It was not very long but extremely strenuous ! Return was the same way- but of course we looked around the cavern described in Sopwiths book!
I first read about this place some thirty years earlier which made it all worth while.
I understand that there is an easier way into the Cavern now!

I don't think I've done anything particularly tough 😞 The Far East of Bedlams Bank is probably the most tiring. Particularly when Peter made us shovel big piles of dirt back in a hole halfway 🙂

Yes, I remember - normal classic Nenthead Traverse, with some extras in it. Up Calcited ladder from CC, down SC incline, up into the stopes, across on to the Longcleugh Vein, down a sublevel, then climb up out near Barons Sump, out along Carr's XV, and on, and as you say the other extra was a round trip around BH.

Yes, this is the trip where I almost single handedly wiped out the membership of CATMHS! We all had very shiny clean gear afterwards though ::)

I was gutted I couln't make that one, until I got reports from the Captain on the wetness factor.

Mind you, trips with the Colonel are never a walk in the park!

When all’s said and done though it was well worth the struggle. After we’d negotiated the handful of re-belays right in the full force of the deluge the level at the bottom was like nothing I’d seen before. Countless tubs, a horse-gin, waterwheel and even a calcified horse or two.

Well that’s what I like to imagine. We might well have found out as well if the level wasn’t sumped to the roof a few yards either side of the shaft...
