I'm very saddened to see the damage that has been done in Smallcleugh over the past few weeks and months. Why do people have to drill and damage part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument and SSSI site?
The North Pennines Heritage Trust would rather develop responsible access and use of the underground heritage at
Nenthead - as, I'm sure, would 99% of the people reading this.

I know how you feel mate. Saw the same thing when we were down a couple of weeks back and found some new drill bits as well. Its a terrible shame. 😞

What's been drilled / damaged? I've not been to Nent for a year or so and don't like to think it'll look appreciably different when I go back 😞

Theres a bit I saw the last time with fresh drill holes where huge chunks of mineral had been removed, lots of it smashed on the floor, mixed in with loads of newspapers and new drill bits lying around. Cannot remember the exact location, somewhere up the Smallcleugh Flats I think.

For the purposes of mineral collection, I presume?

On this scale they are not collecting, but probably trading...illegally!

Its not a new story and nor is limited to Smallcleugh or Nenthead.
Its an old argument but some mineral collectors have caused huge deliberate damage to mines all across the country.

All for a few samples worth a couple of quid.

Maybe if anyone catches any of the gits at it down there, photograph them.

Although guess you might end up at the bottom of a shaft with a Hilti drill jammed up your backside. 😞

Jagman is right. I knew of a mineral collector ( no longer with us ) when finding a good specimen would take what he needed and then smash the rest with a bar to prevent others having what he had

Personally, I'd have gibbets outside the horse level entrances at Nenthead, but I think the tourists might find them a bit offputting.

Seriously , any information about who might be responsible for this vandalism needs to be passed to the NPHT so they can get the police involved - if Nenthead is scheduled and SSSI'd then there's a whole list of things the perpetrators can be charged with in addition to theft and criminal damage.... :guns: The more this goes on, the harder it will end up being for us to get into places like this.

Edit - even if there's not enough evidence to bring charges, then at least the NPHT can refuse entrance to the suspects in future!

Ben I cannot remember, it was in a couple of places, I am sure up in the Smallcleugh Flats, and also somewhere in the same vicinity there was deep narrow cuts into the rock as well, where it had been broken off, the kind of cuts you'd get from something like a Stihl saw, though I don't know for sure what made the cuts but it looked a bit suspicious. I'll probably be heading back there in the next week or two so I'll try and get pictures of where this was.

Too much rubbish in there as well, seems to be some mineral collecting going on in Smallcleugh and Incline flats, bits of lead and rock spewn everywhere. Was talking to this fellow at Glengowla mines in Ireland earlier today, the problem is also significant in Ireland.

The damage is in Wheel Flats, and has been there for a considerable time, looks like someone drilled the wall and possibly used some det cord to detach some of it, as usual there is damage in other areas! Rather than "take on " these vandals, just keep an eye on them , if seen on return to the carpark note their reg and tell NPHT or the Police and it can be sorted out from there

Difference is that this time round there isn't anyone here arguing their right to destroy anything in their path to get a few samples.
What happened last time was quite right and entirely a different siuation.

With my admin hat on.

Last time around, that person was expelled for:

a) being deliberately unpleasant, and most importanly;
b) for thinly veiled threats of violence

Very simple. Threaten anybody on here violence underground and you're out.

Back on topic, nice work Ben

Speaking (well, typing) as the person who banned the individual concerned, all I'd add is that he appeared to have done his very best to get banned! :)

I seem to recall having no alternative in the end - but on the bright side, it's the only time in the forum's history that anyone has been banned for conduct rather than for purposefully registering to use the site for advertising/spamming.

I wonder if there's anything we can do as a forum to try and encourage people not to try their hand at re-working old mines?
