Global Warming isn't doom and gloom for everyone. The retreating Greenland ice has meant that more areas can be practically mined and old mines can be reopened. The Black Angel zinc mine is a prime example.

Not too sure I'd fancy the climb Colonel. There again I can't speak for others. 🙂 One things for sure I can imagine a number of AN members would have a whale of a time. Anyway the latest buzz I have is that Simon's looking into it. 😉

Spot on. It's about 600m from the mine entrance to the Fjord.

The logistics of mining here many years ago are difficult to imagine. They sure must have been a tough lot. I believe the other way it's 350m from the top.

Does that mean these mines were once not covered by ice given retreating ice makes them accessible again?

As I read it they were accesable for around 6 months over summer, that has now increased to around 8 months a year.
Does raise the issue that if this is worth ming them surely someof the Cumbrian mines must be too, far easier than exploiting this one

I think that they were covered in ice for much of the year so could only really be worked for short periods for that reason and the foul weather conditions. But a number of factors now make them viable again. Retreating ice and climatic conditions means that they can probably be worked for most of the year; new technology and not least, the price and demand for metals.
There are also other mineral areas in Greenland that couldn't be mined because of the ice but with the ice sheet melting it opens up the possibility/probability of completely new mining areas.

Talking of mines in inaccessible places, I wonder if we will ever see this?

Heres are a couple of links to info on Black Angel

www.angusandross.com/AR-NEW/pages/blackangmine.htm

www.zemek.com/black-ang/pages/photogallery.htm

Angus & Ross plc are presently reopening the mine to recover some of the high grade ore left as pillars from earlier mining. The zones that have become exposed as the ice has retreated where partially known from the underground workings but the outcrop of some new zones has been seen and are being drilled.

That's weird, becuase I was looking at that very same page just last night!

Interesting about the advantages of ice, for support pillars etc.
