I've got a photo from about 15years ago of an outcrop of Ashover Grit at Black Rocks and there is a spoil heap in front of the outcrop.

Any ideas which mine (or quarry) this spoil came from?
I don't think it's Cromfordmoor Mine

I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Had a look at the map and there is a vein in the right place, although it's not shown to be very long

These wasteheaps are from the Seventh Meer Shaft and others on Godbehere's Vein where it runs along the south side of Black Rocks. Very large workings at considerable depth.

Nellie Kirkham wrote an interesting article entitled "The Tumultous Course of Dovegang" which appeared in Derbyshire Archaeological Society and Natural History Society's Journal 1953, it includes a map shewing veins, shafts etc.

Another article she wrote which might also interest you is "The Draining of the Wirksworth Mines" which was published by Derbyshire Archaeological Society in 1963.

You should be able to view these articles at Matlock Local Studies Library as they hold all the DAS Journals. If not, ask Iclok as (from memory) I sent him a copy of these two articles sometime ago.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
