A whizzy new way of viewing photos in albums has been added to the site.

Thank you to mountainpenguin for the suggestion and the specific suggestion of the piece of software to use. I'd never heard of it - although it's used on some major sites such as Google image search.

Every album now has a block near the top left of the page under the Quick Upload Links and Social Networking site links which contains a link to:

Slide show of this album

Look for this graphic:

UserPostedImage

Click this link and the album will be launched in a viewer called CoolIris.

If you've got Flash installed you'll be able to scroll through the images complete with captions and descriptions.

If you've got CoolIris itself installed (it's free and linked from the basic Flash version) then you'll see the images in a very slick 3D effect, but one that has no impact on loading speed and from which you can immediately return to the main site.

Also if you've got CoolIris installed them mousing over any of the miniature thumbnail pictures in the album will reveal the CoolIris logo and clicking on that will also launch the slideshow.

A few people have been suggesting a more interactive way to view photos, but I'd been reluctant becuase some of them seemed a bit awkward to use or slow. What's nice about this one is that it is totally transparent to the main site, if you don't want to use it you can just ignore it.

Try it out on a random gallery http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Dinorwig-31-03-2007-to-01-04-2007/

Pictures are rather pixelated on this machine but not unacceptable given the facility...and my machine!!
Miles, what's the Vista problem?

Gwyn, the pixellation might be because the images in question haven't yet been cached in the larger size on the server, especially in the case of registered user images. Once they've been cached (looked at once by somebody) then they'll display nice and sharp in the viewer.

Little green/blue icon near the top left of the page on each album page? Just under the main header image and below the Facebook, DiggIt icons etc?

Is it not there?

I've found the icon.
On my screen, in Firefox it's top right, next to the Google magnifying glass. It's black and white until the cursor is hovered above it.
Great stuff!

Any site wierdness over the next half hour or so will be due to more updates being uploaded, so please excuse any (brief) outages...

It nearly works on my laptop running F'fox 3 on LinuxMint. I have flash installed and the page loads the 'queue' of pics but I don't get the big picture (story of my life that). No complaint, just a report on how it appears on a none windows pc.

Ah yes, the install page on the software writer's web site http://www.cooliris.com/site/support/download-all-products.php  indicates Mac and PC versions, but no Linux, sorry. Maybe they'll get around to writing one some time? Any idea mountainpenguin?

This script was picked after a couple of people asked for the feature and one person specifically recommended this one (if it's good enough for Google and all that...) rather than a as a slur on Linux users ๐Ÿ˜‰

Final version of this has now gone live, with several improvements such as showing security level (registered user image or nothing for guest) and the description (if entered) as well as the name of teh photographer.

Thanks a lot for this simon its great!
It is worth asking for native plugins for you platforms. They still don't do safari on mac or the iphone yet either.
The plugin also works for flickr.
I am glad other people think its as handy as I do ๐Ÿ˜‰

There is a Safari plug-in version, albeit it doesn't work very well.

The Firefox version is really very impressive - and seems to have a Google search bar included in it, which is surprisingly nifty :)

The Safari plug in works a treat for me, and has all the bells and whilstles of the Firefox one and the IE one on the PC
