Just come across this site, however the photo looks much more like a cave passage than a mine. Anyone been there who can confirm if it's actually taken there?
Is there any real evidence of early mining in the area?

This mine is well documented in Memoirs of the geological survey vol. XVII-The lead,zink,copper and nickel ores of Scotland by G.V.Wilson 1921 page 130 and is on the old series 6" map Renfrewshire XI SW dated 1898, You can view this on the national librey web site through the map room. There should be some evidance of mining at NS353614 and NS352615. Have fun JeremyL

Alasdair. A bit more info. Mines near by. Calderbank, copper NS348595 on the 6" old series Renfrewshire XI S.W 1915: Drumshantie mine copper NS240766 there may be something in the trees off Kirn Drive or not!! Renfrewshire 1 1863; Glengarnock, barytes NS333529: Lakfield mine copper NS249762 possable not much there, may be worked opencast: Muirshiels mines barytes NS282648 Renfrewshire X 1863 a large mine. The image shown is of a trial adit at a length of around 2 meters and the second image is Cleeves Cove which is a natural cave. I've got some images of Kaim here:

I'll upload them to the actual Kaim album here too. It's not very big, one level that's about 40 meters long and ends at a collapse or infilled shaft.

Was partly interested on behalf of someone researching Absalom Bennett of Marazion who had an interest in copper mines in that area. There were a number of company floatations in the 1860's to work copper mines around Lochwinnoch.
