Hi all

I'm going to be visiting said mine soon and I was just wondering if anyone could confirm you can make your way underground from the adit to 10 fathom level to the haulage adit (20 c?)?

That would make for a nice trip if so.

Hi Joso

Yes, you can do 10 down to 20, you can do 5 down to 10 as well with a bit of rope (but it doesn't add much to the trip)

There's a blue polyprop handline to get you down the slab from 10. And there's a small climb down (easy, couple of metal spikes) to get down to 20.

That is if I remember it correctly! It's a fairly easy route to pick out.

Fantastic, thanks. No need to bring my own ropes and SRT stuff then!?

Thanks again

No, no need for ropes for Bryn Eglwys.

If you don't mind getting wet check out the workings on the other side of the valley as well.

Thanks Simon. I was secretly hoping it would be a bit technical but I've wanted to go back there for years so this sounds good to me.

How wet is wet, by the way? Moist? Soggy? Swimming!? Convincing the others on my party is the trick!

Cheers

The workings on the other side of the valley are a flat slide on your back into a mostly covered adit, then nearly waist deep if I recall. Been a few years since I was last there and memory is a bit vague.

Seem to recall 20 is a bit damp as well. Maybe somebody who has been there more recently can comment better!

There is a choke in the exit adit unless it's been cleared where water builds up, it's the only exit AFAIK. There is a shaft just after this also with some bolts in place I've been meaning to go back and drop down to see where it goes

There is a route right across the valley from one side to the other, but it's rather a squeeze in the middle. I also think you might need SRT to get out but I can't remember clearly.

So you could go from 20 down main shaft to 50 and right the way to the other workings? That would be a good trip. Probably beyond my current party's expectations though...

Danswift, do you know if the choke is passable? I guess I'll find out for sure on Saturday ..!

I had a look at that link once Chris, after you said you'd done it a good few years ago. Not for the faint heated. And not for me either

Yeah it was easily passable just an inconvenience as the water backs up and it's a dry trip up to that point

The link sounds awesome  more reason to go for another explore.

Great, I'm going to tell them it's dry all the way then afterwards I'll whip out my spare socks "nyer nyer!"

Thanks for your help everyone!

According to my typically sparse notes:
"Entered 15B, down to 25, dug into Cantrybedd"
I have an idea that others in the party had rigged our escape route.

It was very very tight in the middle though. Not for people who enjoy pies.

I notice a lot of chamber referencing but can only find surface plans on here? is there an underground plan?

'There is a book' to quote the late Tony Oldham.
Slates from Abergynolwyn by Alan Holmes. If anyone has it, Mike Moore at moorebooks will have it.

I'm going to give that a go one day, perhaps not during mince pie season though. May be able to persuade my friend to come down the main shaft to 50 to look at how tight tight can get.

Don't forget that the 25 is not at the bottom of the shaft. That's the 50, so you need to get off part way. As I recall, there is a lot of water going down the shaft from the 25, so it gets a lot wetter at that point!!

We always meant to go back and try that shaft...

The one under where the mill used to be, that drops into the deep adit is similarly amusing.

Those of us on the surface had a debate about why everyone who had gone before was descending so jerkily - until we tried it ourselves and discovered the waterfall that made the rope a bit slippy. 😮
