Is there much to see if I don't go with SRT gear?

Quite a lot really. Most of the mine can be accessed with a bit of care, the west side of level 25 is the only one that needs SRT for certain. 10c down to 20c, the daylight adit, is a nice two hour visit and takes in most of the remaining artifacts on 15c on the way.

I've never been underground there but a surface walk is quite interesting too. Park in the Talyllyn Railway car park at Abergynolwyn station and walk alongside the line to the forestry level crossing and follow the circular path from there which takes in the mineral tramway and passes the Alltwyllt and Cantrybedd inclines.

I have a copy of Boyd - The Talyllyn Railway that you can borrow if you're interested. A very interesting history of the Railway but also covers the quarry as well as the two histories are very much interlinked.

as martin says the c side of the workings is walkable with out srt gear but is waist deep on level 20, you can also walk in on level 50 through the long tunnel but this is neck deep passed the new mill shaft and gets drier at the main shaft.
you can absail down the main shaft to miss the deep water but there is still a waist deep section where the tunnel meets the main adit across the valley. On this level though there are only 3 chambers accesable and one wagon.

There is an excellent book on 'Bryneglwys 'quarry called 'Slates from Abergonolwyn'. Has quite a detailed history of the mine with some good photos. It was published about 15 years ago, I don't know if it available new now.
