Hello all,

I'm looking to pay a post lockdown visit to Mid/North Wales in the next 4 weeks to scratch the nagging itch of doing some mine/quarry exploration.

I've been to Bryneglwys many times, but i've never ventured underground as the adits have always seemed very hard to find.

I'm looking to do some photography of the abandoned winch and wagons on floor 15. From doing a bit of research, I believe there is an adit (15b) straight into this floor...? Is this correct and is it accessible? Or can it only be accessed via a through trip from the floor 10c adit?

If there's anyone about from the 15th to the 22nd of August, then some company would be very welcome 🙂

Worth noting that the suggestion in the PDF to buy a book from Sara Eade is problematic as I believe she has died.

Thanks for your replies and the heads up on the permit, i'll get that sorted.

That document is actually what I needed clarity on. It mentions floor 15 is accessed by an adit (15b), but from the book, which I did manage to get from the Talyllyn, shows the adit being in a different part of the quarry on the other side of the valley from 10c which people seem to enter, and below 10c the map says 'site of adit 15c'....so i'm just wondering the following things. Is 15c accessible? If not, Does the adit 15b link up with 15c (I'm guessing probably not) and if not, is descending down from 10c or ascending up to 10c the only real option?

My memory is a bit vague since visiting in 2009.

We entered 15B, and descended to floor 25. Then we crossed the valley underground, and somehow got out on the Cantrybedd side. I imagine we pre-rigged it, unless you can walk out on that floor.

From memory, I don't think the winches/wagons are accessible directly from an adit. The daylight adit (level 20??) Is the quickest way to them, but it's quite wet. Or you can go in level 10 and climb down the chambers to 15.

Adits on the other side of the workings are certainly worth a look, as is the deep adit but that latter is very wet!

Great, thanks guys. I've seen footage of the trip down from 10c; Is the the route up to 15c relatively obvious? got my waders so hopefully the wet won't be too much of a problem.

It's easy peasy, find the daylight adit, wade in, follow the darkness, past the shaft, keep going, climb up to the next level, etc.

Thats the accent/descent between 10c and 15c.

Can't remember? you were the the youngest person on that trip. If you carry on this way you will end up like somebody else we know.

Seriously, your good self and the King of Corris descended from 15B to 25B and then followed the vein through the collapsed area and made it to the Main Shaft. Apparently the collapse coincides with a shaft up. From my notes the squeeze through the boulders was so tight that you were accused of interfering with your fellow explorer.

Thanks Jon. I knew I could rely on your vastly superior note taking skills!

The collapse does coincide with a shaft up - part way through the collapse there was a high void with a ceiling made of hanging death. We didn't tarry.

P.S. I have been on 215 underground trips since then, so I can be forgiven for being slightly flaky on my recollections.
