A warning to all, the rail 'bridge' across Luke Hall's sump has gone and there is currently no safe route over.

When going across today, the inbye side started to move resulting in a certain amount of concern!

We managed to recover 2 of the 3 rails but unfortunately at the moment the route is death wish only.
We have plans for a new bridge but until then please keep clear.

That area of Smallcleugh over recent years, seems to be on the move, so it is not really a surprise that the side of the shaft decided to join in!
Nick, I think you might be able to bolt a couple of rails together, to give you the extra length you are going to need!
I think you would have to take rails out of the main horse level.
Probably best to cut off the nuts on the rails, using a battery angle grinder.
You might also be able to brake the nuts, off by bashing them with a really hard cold chisel. Good luck!

Given the span we are thinking of using several scaffold tubes.
That particular area is being very unstable at the moment...

That area has shown movement before, I can remember chunks of the sides of the dump dropping away when we were crossing maybe 15 years ago... I would be checking the whole thing out carefully before trusting even scaffold across it..

It looks a bit more serious than just the sides dropping away, more like major ground movement.

As a whole, big problems up at the Nent.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

The mines I'm afraid are like us, getting old.. Along with this whole HSE thing you really wonder if there's a long term future unless we get some kind of way of organising basic access maintenance as a whole, everyone take a turn...
We all had a lot out of nent, we are all going to have to put back a little each:)

This is how myself and nick left it Roy. As we wanted to make sure it looked impassable incase anyone attempted to skirt round it.

Heading inbye before Luke Halls sump turn left then take a right crawl leads to the cross cut on the far side of the sump, a just in case route !
