I've recently moved to Threlkeld and have an extensive caving background but little experience of mine exploration. I'm interested in Gategill Middle Level having explored the low level. Has anyone been into this? I'm a bit concerned about the stability of the sloping entrance and cracked roof !! Is access possible from the 500 ft level shaft above?

If you live in Threlkeld pop down to the Mining Museum in Kewsick and speak to Ian Tyler, i'm sure he will know.

There is still an entrance above the level shown in the picture.
Been in a short way Its just not very inspiring from a cavers perspective so don't know if this is typical of whats encountered in mines Until I find out more I'm reserving judgement and keeping out. Anyone with more experience care to poke there nose in and pass judgement? :confused:

I looked at these levels years ago and they didn't go far.
The deep adit goes but entry releases large amounts of ochre so its best kept out of. Nothing much to see in there anyway.

My recommendation is to join the Mines of Lakeland Exploration Society, you can visit the Keswick museum and do this at the same time.
They organise some good trips for people of all levels of expertise.

Looked at the shaft in the higher level a couple years back but have never been sufficiently motivated to going back with gear. Should get my arse out of gear really.

The little walk-in levels along that side of the fells don't really represent the best Cumbria has to offer, its worth giving some of the better known places a shot.

Speak to Ian at the Keswick mining museum ,you will find that he has for sale a number of books ,published obout the mines of the lakes ,Carrock@The Mines of Skiddaw and Blencathra is the one you need. 🙂

If you are a caver I would advise you to join MOLES. Your presence on meets will significantly reduce the average waist size but your nerves will be shot though in no time.

What is the problem with ochre? I've now had a look in the 500ft level to the ventilation shaft. I haven't descended this yet.
