Who's responsible for the cliffs and the adit's?

Bit of a legal minefield maybe?

Apart from the lack of suitable head protection did he have any other safety protection or implement any other safety measures??

Not impressed with the presentation, it was all a bit cobbled together.

The video - towards the end - explained Cornwall Council's response that cliffs themselves were owned by the Parish Council.

I can rather see both sides of the argument, leaving them open might lead to an accident which, in turn, will lead to Much Hand Wringing. Gating everything leads to control and restricted access. I'm all for sensible access; fences and signs, people engaging their own responsibility if they choose to ignore them; nuts and bolts and - if strictly necessary - easy access to keys.

Not my part of the country through so cannot really comment since I don't know all the details.

A knee jerk reaction to the death a couple of years ago.

Is it not far off local council elections? Looks like a ploy to get the ban it janet brigade on board for his vote.

If the 'caves' really are that dangerous - well done for publicising the easy access on youtube!

My comment is that before embarking upon the thin end of the wedge, they ought to see how fat the wedge is at the other end.

Certain adits need a "This is bloody dangerous" sign, perhaps accompanied by a picture of a screaming snapped body pinned down by a massive boulder.

I fear that many hacksaw blades and welding wire will be expended in the grille-it-cut-it-grille-it-cut-it game of ping pong which will ensue.

The problem with this sort of thing, including mineshafts is that there are a lot of hysterical idiots who get their arses in their hand and run around in a right old flap/see it as a way to £££££/consult/etc and it's in no-ones interests.

Due to the dangerous nature of the cliffs, I propose that they are fenced at the top and people are banned from being below them. Even if they are paying "customers". HSE gone MAAAAAADEEEE!!!!

I've watched the video and am wondering what the production of such a thing will do in order to favour the producer. Does he plan to make money out of this? Is he merely autistic about such a thing?

Anyway, life is dangerous. I'm sure in the hundreds of years the adits have been there, more people have been killed by bloody lib-dems. How about we ban them instead?

Has anyone read freakonomics?

It points out how people often confuse what is and what isnt dangerous.

In America (where its warmer) parents are often relaxed about letting their children go to friends houses where there is a swimming pool. Yet the same parents wont let the child go to a friends house where the parent keeps a gun 'because its dangerous'

Statistically the child is many times (cannot remember the figure) more likely to die in the pool!

If only people like councillor Dave opened their eyes to the REAL dangers in this county they may realise that these adits post very little danger to the public.

Perhaps he could campaign and do something useful like getting potholes filled in.

You shouldn't knock the guy too much as he could be an asset. I'll be advising the grandparents (who live in PPC's neck of the woods) to buy an air source heat pump to reduce their energy bills in their dotage as there seems to be a surfeit of hot air in the area...

Maybe it's all down to liability, nobody owns an open mine working in Cornwall until the Acme Gold Drilling Corp truck turns up.

Lords.

It is only by falling over as a child and grazing your knee that you learn not to fall over so much.

Are we to be wrapped so much in cotton wool that we lose all judgement?

Or is every angle risk something that someone else should consider for us and then protect us from?

Without risk, there is no adventure.

Without adventure we discover nothing.

His other videos include some very boring footage of ice climbing... now how would he feel about keeping people off frozen waterfalls in case they hurt themselves.

Seems like someone with a political axe to grind to me.

Oh Hell! what about the Radon levels being vented onto the beach by these 'scary' adits (leats?) or the the nasty water polluting the beach with heavy metals and poisons such as Arsenic. Oh! Shock Horror! close all beaches immediately.
Signage should now read - No dogs, No camping, No fires, No Children, Access licences available by appointment.

Given the number of years these places have been accessible for and the number of visitors that have fallen foul of these since abandonment in the 19th century, I'd say Cornwall Council has adopted the right approach in doing nowt.
If the nannying gets any worse, they will be turning people back at the bridge who don't have adequate personal protection equipment to visit Cornwall.
I regularly face more hazards driving into Truro than any one visit to any mine or adit I can think of.
Find yourself in a 'scary' place you can turn back and get out. Find yourself at the mercy of some clown in a Fiesta that can't read the road signs or just sails through red lights oblivious to other drivers, and you are in it wether you want to be there or not.
If he likes to be heard, I suggest he buys a trumpet.

dont locals normally ignore the safety signs (especially the teens) so a sign isnt going to do anything.

I agree with Roy here, however, a few weeks back i did read something on the internet that said something along the lines of not making any attempt to grille or block up any adits that are accessible, because if children or smaller bodies get in, or find another way in( which is very likely ) then it hinders rescue attempts if they get into trouble. So they said they have to leave them open.

As far as i know, that was something to do with st.agnes council.

That guys stupidity on accessing the adit, and making a short documentary, without a helmet....

Sometimes i think theres too much health and safety around these days, ? It protects these idiots. Do away with the health and safety practices and we will eventually end up with the intelligent people left!

Standing with his back to the ocean was pretty hazardous, better fence that off as well!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
