Hi,
I'm new here (just signed up) and is just starting off looking at cornish mining.
I am trying to find out about mining in the Tregrehan Valley, nr St Austell. The big mine is Wheal Eliza at Boscundle and there is a lot written about that. I am intrested in the smaller one which appear to be grouped under Tregrehan consol name further up the valley including Boscoppa.

Any information would be great.

You probably want Hamilton Jenkin's book "St Austell to Saltash" (weeny thing with a lot of info). There is a bit in Dines, but not that much.

There are a few chaps in St Austell who will have probably had a mooch around there.

Wasn't Tregrethan Consols also known as Wheal Joney? There is a bit of info in Spargo (1865) on Wheal Eliza and Boscundle.

Extract from AKHJ:

Boscundle Mine, later to form part of Wheal Eliza is mentioned in a deed of 1620 when Mr. Trewbody, the mineral lord, granted the sett to John Hodge and Richard Pendray at a "dish" or royalty of one-fifth.....

In 1700 ... copper as well as tin is mentioned in a grant of High and Middle Park Mine near Tregrehan. The applicant in this case was a Mr. Gabriel Wayne, one of the early Bristol copper smelters.....

I think that is about it. Anyone who knows the area (definitely not me) might spot other relevant stuff in HJ, but I'll leave that for them.

A very underused resource for industrial archaeology in Cornwall is the SMR (Sites and Monuments Record) database of the Historic Environment Section (Kennal Building, Old County Hall, Truro). There are detailed entries for many Cornish mines - I entrred a fair few of them several years ago while at CAU! There might be some information on the mines you are interested in around St Blazey. The database is not online but people can make an appointment to look at it.

Don't let them hear you call it an SMR tho'; they've been called Historic Environment Records for about 5 years now. 🙂

Tregrehan Consols aka Wh. Joney and Tregrehan Tin Mine Ltd. Sunk 20fthms below adit. 1889-93, sold 10.5tons of BT for £512. No record of the great Goffan lode survives (Collins 1912)

Dines mentiones it only as part of Whel Eliza.

Wheal joney is a very interesting site still in reasonabley good condition.
Terry Corby is the owner and he will be very happy to show you around.
You also have Ruby iron mine in the tregrehan valley, if you dont mind getting wet there is plenty to see in there.

The names have changed that much within C. Council departments, it's hard to keep abreast of things Bob Pit! Most people still know the database as the SMR and refer to the archaeology section of HES as CAU; confused? I am . :confused: At least CCC didn't get to change the council logo ahead of the unitary authority!!! One small victory for those of us who like continuity!!

Whilst looking at the engine house at Boscundle from the footpath side of the fence the owner approached us and asked if he could help. He is more than happy to arrange access for genuinely interested people, just ring the office for his golf course at tregrehan to arrange it.

Hi

there are quite a few interesting bits at the Cornwall records Office (including an Hours Book, Horse Labour Book and share certificates for Tregrehan Consols - if you have a days to spend at the records office it's worth it. You may be interested to know we are opening the mine site as part of the National garden Scheme twice next year: 25th April and 11th July (midday-6pm). There is an entry fee for charity. Maybe we'll see you then.

As a complete aside, it is a great shame that Tregrehan Speed Hillclimb in no long in effect. I was very much looking forward to putting my mini up the hill. Edit:- Not seen advertised.

I assume the mine pumped to surface.

Stuey i know the owner of the estate, i mentioned the hill climb to him a while ago. As far as i can remember the club had some problems, nothing to do with him stopping it.
Have you raced up there before?
I was tempted to enter my bike, got put off seeing a rider break his arm in front of me though 😢
