I am due to be in High Wycombe at somewhat of a loose end for much of Saturday this coming weekend.

Of course I may cough up for a look around the Hellfire caves and combine it with a bit of a stroll in the sunshine but is there anything else I should be looking at whilst I'm there?

Looks like there are a few chalk mines but nothing with photos or any detail on here so likely not much underground?

I used to live there. Very little underground that I was ever aware of, except for the Hellfire caves which are worth a look.

There was an awesome indian-staffed kebab shop when I lived there and they did this spectacular donner kebab with curry wrapped in a nann bread. It was the size of a rugby ball and absolutely lovely.

Probably not there anymore though 😞

Bit further afield, but there are Fuller's Earth pits as Aspley Heath near Woburn. Probably no underground, but looks quite pleasant for woodland walking.

Otherwise chalk, sand and gravel!

I'm dropping off and collecting Mrs T for a conference there. I suspect there will be a meal involved at the end of the day but I'd stake the farm on her not opting for the curry kebab - as tempting as that sounds!

It looks like a tourist trip into the Hellfire caves may be the best option although the lego gold mine does look good too!

There's probably a stool joke to be made if anyone can be bothered.

I used to go there a fair bit, years ago we had a lab on Desborough Road. We were on the 4th floor and the police often used our windows to watch the 'International Club' on the other side of the road. The pub next door had lap-dancing at lunchtimes and handed out receipts on Taxi company headed paper so you could claim them on expenses. Classy area!

Mind you the Isaac Lord Hardware store was excellent.

Never got to explore the surrounding area though.

Some links in the article may be worth researching.

Very interesting, the description of tunnels with rails to run beer barrels down sounds a bit like the tunnels to the quayside in Kings Lynn, one of which is visible if you peer behind the curtain at the back of the tea room in the vaults underneath the theatre.

I was wondering if there were any nearby canal tunnels you could explore, but apart from the (possibly) upcoming HS2 Chiltern one (which might affect Wendy from Wendover), there appears naught.

PS I like these 'unconventional mining area' threads when they occasionally appear. They can bring odd stuff to light.

Well in the end I had a pleasant (apart from a run-in with an irate BMW driver) stroll up to Hughendon Manor and a trip around the Hell Fire Caves.

Thanks to all for suggestions - Journal post to follow 🙂

Commiserations for the run in. It's very useful to have a map showing ROW, and even more so a phone showing such maps and your position on it.

However, I have also frequently been in the position of being on a right of way, and the landowner refuses to look a my documentation. It's also frightening the number of paths where the fingers on the pole, as well as the pole have disappeared. This seems to be more so with the modern wooden variety where the landowner can simply t**t off the sign with a mallet, on the assumption the footpath user, if he finds the footpath thinks it's rotted and has fallen off.

Well although the fellow was very aggressive it didn't spoil my day, I rather appreciated the comic element of it.

Better if you enter an argument to have an aim in mind, having already offered an apology for my (extremely minor) navigational error it was hard to determine what else he wanted out of the discussion, I was at a bit of a loose end until 5pm so was free all day to discuss at length the various options available to get back on the right path which was about 6 feet away, whereas he appeared in somewhat of a hurry......

Anyone know anything more about the tunnel under the Icehouse?

I guess it must be part of the 'Hillside' Air Ministry set-up but the only stuff online seems to be about the Ice House building itself.

If you refer to your concrete tunnel image nothing obvious on a few searches, adjusting the exposure shows two brick walls forming a doorway to a small room. Assume an air raid shelter?

Edit: Also appears to be constructed pre-cast sections.

I think air raid shelter is probably right, it's hard to see exactly what is through the door at the end (the entrance was securely grilled) I wondered if it might be quite extensive though given the length of the entrance passage.

Can you add a FlashEarth or map link to your image as the local topography may reveal some clues? Research seems to indicate quite a few people were working there so possibly larger than it looks. Possibly more than one shelter around.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
