To briefly digress...that is a lovely blue colour on your Octavia Roy, the grubby black Fabia parked next to it at Nent yesterday was ours.

Bloody hell Rick, you were at Nent enjoying its miles of open passage and fascinating industrial archaeology when you could have been out with your club digging at 10 yard long levels and experiencing all the varying kinds of fog, bog & spiky plants the moors have to offer. You must be crackers!

Next thing I know I'll be getting emails inviting me on caving trips with permits. Oh, hang on.......

Indeedy. It is a society though in all honesty, I have no idea what the difference is!

We were just coming out of Rampgill when your friend was walking down from Smallcleugh. He thought you'd be in till around 7, a bit too long for us to wait.

I'm pleased he confirmed my intuition as to who the VRS owner would be.

Will anybody stiil be there next Saturday, or is that home time?

Very much the latter at the moment as numbers seem to be down and arrangements in a state of flux. Maybe weather putting people off, it puts me off venturing outdoors!

Yep, not sure if I bought 1 of 2 or whether there was only ever one available though Roy. Got it for what I was prepared to bid though.

Will probably knock up another LED home brew or fit up with a RETRO XP 400lm upgrade as a spare lamp.

Old habits (except for bulbs) die hard.

There is an interesting link from that auction:

http://speleotrove.com/caving/cowlishaw1974-lead-acid-cap-lamps.pdf

tells you more than you you would ever reasonably want to know about Oldham style batteries and lamps.

A phrase that struck me was:

"Using an unreliable lamp is as irresponsible and dangerous as using an unsafe ladder or rope, and so the same care should be taken over the maintenance of lamps as over the maintenance of other equipment."

When last easily available new I paid Β£50 plus for one so Β£35 seemed reasonable.

When combined with ex NCB steel toecap boots no other ballast (such as diving weights) is required whilst wetsuit clad in deep water.

Interesting paper but its important to read it in the contex of the year it was written, 1974.

You want to see him drive the thing. Talk about mid life crisis πŸ˜‰

Chris.
