Hi all,
i am doing a bit of research,
what light do you cave with, im making a list,

1) Megga bright lights,
Scurion, el Speleio, Rude nora, Sten, Viper,

2) Run of the mill lights,
Sp Nova, Petzl Duo, Sp headlight, raptor etc, petzl ultra, fenix hp11, led upgrades (pitlamp, bison, ledcavelamp, Roy's superlamps, etc)

3) Bog standard group lights,
Fx2/3/5, Chinese miners light, Oldham, pixa 2/3, Trog light

4) Back up / emmergancy light,
Attitude, Fenix, Petzl Tica xp,


please add to the list, with links if poss,

Heh - I just logged on here after reading the same post on UKC, as I just knew what the first response would be ;)

Anyway, to avoid duplicate data making the survey redundant, as I'm on both fora (?), I use a StenLight as my main light - thanks to AditNow! And two Active Products 90lm torches on either side of the helmet.

StenLight - but then I have to claim a wee bit of bias ;)

MagnumStar, a run of the mill Roy Fellowes lamp (!) for big stuff, one of Miles' Chinese lamps for backup/smaller grovels.
My backup is my companions lamp.

Chinese light for digging (er, that's to see while i'm digging- not to use as a shovel! :lol:

Oldham DL6 as main lamp with a Retro LED as my photo lamp. Also use a Ultrafire 1000 thingy for pics as well. Back up is either a Petzl Myo or a Troglite type lamp.

OK to answer the thread

Obviously my own lamps, Trigon for general use, Maggie for photography, although now I have the weight down a bit, the Maggie has crept into general use in slate mines.

Anybody on here using a Rude Nora?
I havent seen any user postings about these. I got to see one up north and it looked beautifully made and really small and light, but I was not at all impressed with the output. Batteries could have been low though, loss of output is what you get with low voltage systems as the batteries get depleted. My Eco is like that.

I have yet to see the new Stenlight in the flesh.

They are indeed very nicely made; I think the output is about 800lm.

I have yet to see the new Stenlight in the flesh.

To be fair you could be excused for not noticing a new one from the previous generation. The only changes are uprated emitters and a grey cable.

I did not meen to offend by trying to catagorise lamps, just trying to list the ones i have used, seen or heard of, and just loosly lumped them in rough price / lumim / popularity / etc,

I am after trying to find any obvious / obscure lights in use below ground i havent heard/found/used yet

so any upset felt, i am sorry

I use a Petzl Duo with "Custom Duo" upgrades. This has it's good and bad points...

Good points:
Indestructible.
Has NEVER let me down.
Waterproof (to 5m I think?).
Tough cable/connections.
Lightweight/well balanced.
Separate flood/spot modules, if one fails you still have the other.
Cheap upgrades from standard.
Rechargeable battery packs readily available.
I have an emergency 4xAA adaptor and carry a few AAs just in case.
Battery life on the lowest setting is about 4 days before it goes out completely.

Bad points:
Percieved as "expensive for what they are"
These days I am out-shone by most lamps, especially Stens, Raptors, Fellows ( 😉 ), and many other Oldham/LED hybrids. The lamp is great when I am on my own or with others packing the same heat, but in a group with much brighter lamps it tends to be drowned out.
I have noticed in the last couple of weeks that my main battery pack is getting tired...still nice and bright on turbo but burn time not what it was.
They are probably out of date these days.
Upgrade to an Ultra?? No thanks, I could have a Sten or a couple of Fellows for the same price.

Overall: it does all I need it to and will last me years to come.
Motto: if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

This is starting to get interesting now.

Any opinions on 'High' (8V) V 'Low' 4V systems?

My Fenix TK11 pocket torch typifies this.
I can put in a single 18650 (4V) and it will burn for ever on a diminishing output. Put in 2 X CR123s (8V) and it will burn at full brightness and then suddenly without warning, your in the bleeding dark!

Felllows Ecostar as my main with an old Q40 dive light snoopy looped to my helmet as back up.

Prior to that I was an Oldham devotee for many years and used a succesion of T and T3 (cracking) and MF (bloody awful) cells.

KSE headlamp, wee little fenix as back up "P" clamped to side of helmet and a 100W clulite (hand lamp), 12V 10A/h batteries or sometimes a 110A/h if I want to run it for 11 hours though it's a bit heavy and has a tendency to pour sulphuric acid out if not the right way up. Great for mine exploring if you can take a sack truck with you :lol:

Bang per buck i dont think any get near Roy's portable head sun's

I know of 2 Nora's in use down here for exploring and diving and they are a very good bit of kit
